The Park University indoor track & field program continues to shine on the early goings of 2024-25, as an array of Pirates fall within the top five in their events and Palmer O'Connor qualifies for the NAIA Indoor National Championship off of Saturday's ISU Holiday Invitational in Ames, Iowa.
O'Connor in his freshman year at Park, hailing from De Soto, Kan., and tore through the competition in the 1,000m event for 3rd place and a 2:27.66 to meet the NAIA's "B" standard for qualification into nationals.
Rosjai Curtis earned her third 1st place finish in her second meet as a Pirate, taking the triple jump with a mark of 11.92m. She was at the top of the competition with a 5.74m jump for 2nd in the long jump.
There was plenty more from the Pirates with
Lukas Mehl and
Cayden Walker turning heads in the 3,000m event with 1st and 2nd place. Mehl and Walker recorded the fastest times in the 3,000m indoor event since at least 2009 at Park with times of 8:45.8 and 8:54.1.
Ahmad Evans has been at the top of his game in 2024 and placed 2nd in the long jump and 4th in the triple jump. Evans reached a distance of 6.93m in the long jump and recorded a 13.10m in the triple jump.
Shanai Sweeting made it to the 60m hurdles finals with a 9.20 finish for 6th place, a new personal best for the junior from Nassua, Bahamas.
Coming in 3rd in the mile was Rosanna Kasemier with a 6:08.9, which is about 15 seconds faster than her time from last week.Â
The women's 4x400m relay also represented well with a 3rd place finish with a 4:18.72.Â
