Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Park University softball program played at a high-level at the Park Softball Complex on Wednesday, earning the series split against No. 4 Baker University, 0-2 and 3-2.
Park moves up to 15-16 and 4-10 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play and have won three of their last four games. The Wildcats only have six losses on the season at 28-6 and are 8-4 in the Heart.
GAME 1 BOX SCORE | 0-2
It was shutout softball in game one through 10 innings of play. It was the best pitching showdown of the season between Park's
Adrianna Solary and Skylar Gorrell, who each went 11 innings strong today.
Gorrell maintained the shutout on six hits and three walks, while striking out nine. Solary was outstanding with 10 shutout innings in her outing, allowing seven hits, two walks, and struck out two batters.
Dani Klein and
Paige McPheeters were the only Pirates to earn multiple hits in the game. Klein broke up the no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning and 10 Pirates were left on base, aided by the international tie breaker rule.
Two runs came in to score in the top of the seventh for Baker, which included an RBI double and a squeeze bunt play to score the second runner.
In the bottom of the 11
th, the Pirates had
Macee Austin placed on second base to begin the inning.
Nia Muniz and
Kali Day lined out to second base for the next two outs. Park worked the walk with
Shelby Sanders at the plate, but Klein sent the third line out of the inning to second base to end the game, 2-0.
GAME 2 BOX SCORE | 3-2
Game two was similar in number of hits allowed, but each team had one more hit than in game one. Baker's scoring mimicked the first game as well with two runs scored. They went up 2-0 after scoring one run in both the second and third innings.
Lauren Fiene held off the Wildcat bats though with five strikeouts and worked around eight hits and four walks in her complete game.
A fielding error by the Wildcats started the bottom of the fourth and
Halle Magee tied the game up at 2-2 with one swing of the bat on the only home run of the series. This also served as the only extra-base hit for Park in their two games.
After the top of the seventh, the score remained 2-2 and extra innings was looming again. A lead-off walk to McPheeters was a key moment in the inning and then led into two back-to-back fielding errors to load the bases. Muniz, who has been swinging a hot bat as of late, came through with one of the biggest base hits in her freshman year with the walk-off single up the middle to win the game, 3-2.
Park's lineup is full of local talent, including the two Pirates with all three RBI's today in Magee and Muniz. Magee is in her sophomore season hailing from Platte County High School, while Muniz is a recent 2022 graduate from Park Hill High School.
Muniz has led Park in the last four games with five RBI's, while Magee currently leads Park in home runs in 2023 with seven.
Four errors plagued the Wildcats in game two, while an errorless effort by the Pirates defense helped Fiene to a 7-4 pitching record on the year.
Park aims to further their momentum on Saturday, April 15 for a road doubleheader with Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa.
