The Park University softball program was in Canton, Mo. for a doubleheader with Culver-Stockton College and the Wildcats were able to hit their way to a sweep of Park, 12-4 and 7-6.
Park goes to 12-10 on the year, while Culver-Stockton improves to 16-10.
In the second inning of game one, the Wildcats were on the prowl with a six-hit inning scoring five runs, 6-1. Another four-run fourth put things out of reach. Despite a three-run fifth inning to keep the game going, Culver-Stockton drove in two runs in the sixth to end it, 12-4.
Chloe Gilbert had a pair of doubles in the game and led Park with three RBIs. Bella Roll also had a double and was one of three Pirates with a multi-hit game, including Gilbert and
Hanna Vaught.
Hanna Vaught would only go two innings in the circle allow ing six earned runs, while
Rori Hornung lasted three and a third innings, but the same six runs would come across to score. Very little strikeouts between both lineups, as Culver-Stockton did not strikeout once at the plate, and the Pirate hitters had two strikeouts.
In game two, Park dropped into the third with a three-run inning to make it 3-1. Extra base-hits continued to pile up for Rollo with a home run that inning, followed by a two-RBI double by
Faith Tessman.
A four-run bottom of the second though was a perfect answer for Culver-Stockton and they led 5-3.
There were a couple innings of scoreless softball with Breille Dee working in the circle. She would finish the game with 5.1 innings pitched with only two earned runs, but six unearned runs.Â
Four hits drove in three runs for Park in the top of the fifth to overtake Culver-Stockton, including an RBI single from Rollo and a two-RBI double by
Jordan Crooks, 6-5.
An unfortunate fielding error opened the door for the Wildcats in the bottom of the sixth and a single up the middle scored two runs to take the lead back from. The lead would stick with Culver-Stockton for a 7-6 win.
The Pirates were without a strikeout from their pitching staff in the series, while five strikeouts were earned by Culver-Stockton in game two. Park only allowed one walk in game two, compared to the seven thrown by the Wildcats, but three errors on the board by Park could have been a deciding factor.
