Park University's baseball program 2023 is still in the mix in the 2024 Heart of America Athletic Conference post-season and have four Pirates representing on the Heart All-Conference lists, announced at the beginning of the conference tournament.
The Pirates have
Adam Stilts earning Heart Second Team All-Conference and Heart Gold Glover at pitcher. Three other Park players were named to honorable mention awards, including
Alex Rodriguez,
Gilberto Torres, and
Guillermo Gelpi.
These four and the rest of the team have reached the second most wins in program history so far this season with 32 and have made the Heart post-season for the second time in Park's time in the conference.
Stilts is in his second year at Park and the senior from Alton, Mo. earns his first all-conference and gold glove awards of his Park career. He has had a monumental impact on the team with a 9-2 record in 2024, tied for the most wins in a single-season in Park baseball history. He has 12 complete games in his career with five being recorded in 2024. This season he set a new career high in strikeouts with 55, all while only walking 10 batters for a strikeout to walk ratio of 5.5. Notably, he had a complete game shutout against Missouri Valley this year and had a perfect game brewing through six innings pitched. With 14 assists on the season, the Heart Gold Glover had a 1.000 fielding percentage this year.
Another prominent member of Park's pitching staff is Gelpi, who matches Stilts with only two losses in 2024 for a 5-2 record. This is his first Heart All-Conference Honorable Mention selection. He has one complete game shutout this season against Clarke and tossed 50 strikeouts. He now has 102 strikeouts in two seasons at Park.
Torres has been a pillar in the Pirates' lineup in 2024 with a .408 batting average and knocked in 43 RBI's. In his first season at Park, he has left an impression in the Heart and has been awarded All-Conference Honorable Mention. He's hit for a high average, but the three-hole also has some pop in the bat with 13 doubles, three triples, and three home runs. The junior is a transfer from Ranger Community College and is from San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico.
A long-time Pirate, Rodriguez earns his second All-Conference Honorable Mention award of his career, earning the same accolade in 2022. The senior third basemen is also No. 3 all-time at Park in career at-bats and career hits with 547 at-bats and 186 hits in five seasons. It's been special to watch, as Rodriguez has maintained a batting average over .300 during course of his career and is batting .333 in 2024. This season he has a career-high in RBI's with 25 and has been part of both of Park's Heart Tournament runs.
The Pirates are in the middle of their Heart post-season run and some of these numbers will be affected.
