The Park University softball program was in Leavenworth, Kan. on Wednesday, February 25 against University of Saint Mary. The Spires edged Park in two close games, 3-1 and 6-4.
Park went to 7-6 after the doubleheader and Saint Mary is right at .500 at 5-5.
In game one, the Pirates had
Hanna Vaught go the distance in an extra inning, defensive game. Saint Mary started off the game with a bases loaded walk for the game's first run.Â
Both pitches settled in and it was still 1-0 through three innings.
Faith Tessman had one of the three hits for Park, and her solo home run tied it at 1-1.
Vaught would strikeout eight batters in her 7.1 innings pitched, but a two-run home run would give the Spires the walk-off win, 3-1.
The Pirates had more offense in game two with five hits, but a three-run home run in the bottom of the first would be a tough start to overcome.
Two doubles by Vaught and
Bella Rollo in the top of the third got the Pirates within a run, 3-2.
Myel White pitched three scoreless innings in her 4.1 innings pitched with five strikeouts.
In the bottom of the fifth though, another three runs came in on a bases loaded walk and a two-RBI double, and the Spires led 6-2.
There was some hope in the seventh with an error from the Spires and a fielder's choice to get Park within two, 6-4. The Spires kept Park off the scoreboard with the tying run at the plate.
