High Level Volleyball at the Park Classic, (RV) Park Goes 1-2 in Close Matches

The (RV) Park University women's volleyball program had some of its most high profile matches at are Park hosted tournament, in recent memory, as the Pirates hosted No. 9 Oklahoma Wesleyan University, No. 6 Northwestern College, and a competitive Kansas Wesleyan University team. The Pirates take a win on the first night and come up short in two battles with NAIA top 10 ranked opponents.

1–2 on the weekend, pushes Park to 6-4 on the season. Park's non-conference record this year wraps up at 4-3.

Kansas Wesleyan | 25-18, 25-15, 25-21 | BOX SCORE

Before facing the Pirates, Kansas, Wesleyan began the 2025 Park Classic with No. 6 Northwestern, which sided with the Red Raiders 3–0. The Coyotes immediately went into their next match with (RV) Park. The results were not much different, as the Pirates earned the sweep on Friday night.

The Pirates came out in force with 17 kills in the first set, and they even raised the bar and set three with 19 kills, hitting .442 for the match.

The Pirates got right to it with a 6–1 lead to open the match. Kansas Wesleyan forced their way back to a 10–8 deficit, but Pozza and Dias kept Park in control with a 3–0 run, 13–8. Not long after, Indi Zetic's two kills and Trinity Iverson's double-block with Zetic advanced the lead to 17–10. The hot start helped Park continue on to a 25–18 set one victory.

Ella Schwab had a big roll in the start of set two for the Pirates with two service aces that gave Park a 4–0 lead. Park reached a six point lead off of kills from Dias and Viisnja Canak, 8–2. Dias came up with another two kills midway through set two as part of a 3–0 run for a 15–8 lead. The offense continued to surge and the Pirates went onto a 25–15 set two win.

Set three began with a Canak service ace, but then the Coyotes went on one of their largest runs of the night and led 7-1. The Pirates nearly got it all back with a 5-0 run, leading the charge was Zetic with three kills in a row. The Pirates would soon tie Kansas Wesleyan at 11 off of a double-block from Zetic and Pozza. The score would be tied four more times, before the Pirates took the lead 17–15 off of kills from Iverson and Zetic. This proved to be the difference maker as Dias capped off the night with a kill to defeat Kansas Wesleyan in straight sets, 25–21.

Zetic and Dias led Park with 14 and 13 kills. Next up was Iverson with seven kills and Canak with six.

Defensively, Canak Had a good match with nine digs and Schwalm would lead Park with 15 digs for the match.

Jullia Alvarez was playing a great opening match with 44 assists and two kills.

As a team the Pirates hit .442, their season-high so far in 2025.

No. 9 Oklahoma Wesleyan | 19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 27-29 | BOX SCORE

The Pirates hit .421 in set three, which was the highest hitting percentage of either team in the match. Oklahoma Wesleyan overall edged Park with a .252 hitting percentage compared to Park's .221. The Eagles got to 18 kills twice in set one and three, while the Pirates had their match high at 17 kills as a team in set three.

The Eagles would take the match in four sets and improved to 10-1 on the season.

It was a quick start for Oklahoma Wesleyan with an 8-1 lead to begin the game. Kills by Zetic, Pozza, and Canak helped rally Park to 9-6, but the Eagles pushed the lead further to a seven point spread at 15-8 soon enough. Park went on a 4-0 run to force an Oklahoma Wesleyan timeout to make it 17-14. Zetic and Canak with kills, while the senior Luna Martins dropped a service ace down as well. The timeout settled the Eagles enough for them to hold off Park, 25-19.

It was tied nine times through the first nine points for both teams. Finally, a 3-0 run off of two service aces for Oklahoma Wesleyan gave them a 11-9 lead. Park would take both timeouts early with their final timeout burned at the 14-10 mark. It did ignite Park for a 3-0 run off of kills from Daniela Gomez and Isadora Dias to come within one point, 14-13. A 6-2 run by the Eagles put an end to that and they would go on to a 25-21 set two win.

The Pirates would come out and play a terrific set against the Eagles. After being down in the early going, the Pirates tied the match on a Gomez kill to make it 12-12. Four more alternating points later and Alvarez put Park ahead by one with a service ace 16-15. Back-to-back kills by Zetic really turned around the dynamic of the set and the Pirates led by two, 18-16. A 4-0 run pretty much sealed it for Park, as Schwalm snuck in an ace, while two consecutive blocks by Zetic and Pozza gave Park a 23-18 lead. The Eagles put up a few more points, before Park closed out the set by the hand of Gomez, 25-21.

The Pirates carried the momentum in set four with a 4-0 run, their best start of the match. Soon the Eagles battled back and overtook Park 8-7 to force a timeout from Head Coach Michael Talamantes, who was 2-0 in previous matchups with the Eagles. This match from there was as tight as it could be with 14 ties going all the way up to set point, 24-24. A timeout just before this by Oklahoma Wesleyan was tactful and the Eagles did survive set point off of a service error to tie it at 24 all. Then Park faced a set point at 26-25, but Dias and Iverson had back-to-back kills to give them a set point at 27-26. A 3-0 run was the response from the Eagles though, as they avoided a potentially dicey set five, 29-27.

This was the first win for Oklahoma Wesleyan against Park in program history. Zetic was the Pirate who stood out with 16 kills and 11 digs for a double-double. She also had four blocks form the outside as well to help defensively.

Pozza was a force at the net with seven blocks for the match, but also contributed nine kills. Dias and Iverson contributed eight and six kills each, while IVerson also had three blocks for her squad.

Schwalm had another 12 digs to her credit and Alvarez gave the Pirates 32 assists. Silvia Albani split some time with Alvarez and added 19 assists to the Park cause.

No. 6 Northwestern | 19-25, 21-25, 25-21, 27-29 | BOX SCORE

It was an even closer matchup with Northwestern, a team that Park has beat once in 2014 during the legendary 40-0 National Championship season, but since 2022 Park is now 0-3 against the Red Raiders. Northwestern was the NAIA Runner-up in 2023 and has continued to be within the top 25 each year. Northwestern moves to 12-3 following their five set win, while Park closed the Park Classic with a 6-4 season record now.

Both sides defensively posed challenges for the other, as Park only hit .082 for the match and Northwestern not much better at .173. It wouldn't be until the fifth set that Northwestern would have their better attacking set at .318.

The Red Raiders went up on Park in the early going 7-2, which held true up until a 4-0 run by Park got them back within two points at 12-10. Zetic had three kills in that span. A 4-0 run by the Red Raiders regained some control for them at 16-10 and Park was never able to break through at 25-18.

Northwestern had an advantage in blocking in set two with four blocks to Park's one. Despite that teh set began with seven ties before a 3-0 Park run gave them a 9-7 lead, courtsey of kills and block by Iverson. Two more alternating 3-0 runs by both teams created a tug-of-war for the lead in Breckon Sports Center. Park took advantage of a Northwestern service error and a kill by Zetic to go up 14-12. The turning point started to happen after a block by the Red Raiders, which soon brought on a 6-1 run to make it 18-15. The Pirates were able to bring it within two points a couple of times, but once again the Red Raiders took the set, 25-21.

The Pirates facing a potential sweep and down 15-10 had their work cut out for the, but it was a tremendous team effort to spur on a 5-0 run to tie at 15-15. Kills by Iverson and Dias, and a service ace by Schwalm was the recipe for success; and Northwestern called a timeout. Even after a 3-0 run by Northwestern, the Pirates answered back with another 5-0 to overtake the Red Raiders, 20-18. This time it woul dthe Pirates holding on 25-22 off of an Iverson kill and an attack error by Northwestern to end the set.

The Pirates proved to have a lot of fight in set four, and unlike the previous match, the Pirates were able to finish the job to force a set five. Park quickly got to a 9-6 lead after a 4-0 run, including kills by Zetic and Teodora Tasic, and an ace by Zetic. A 3-0 run by Northwestern was halted by Pozza and Dias' double-block, which Park turned around for a 3-0 run to go up four, 16-12. Northwestern made it tough and came within two points 18-16, but Park rattled off a 4-0 run to go up six. The Pirates needed that boost, as the Red Raiders were dangerously close to overtaking Park late, as they were able to tie the set at 23 all and then again at 24. A service error and then kill by Pozza tied the match at 2-2 with a 26-24 win over Northwestern.

The Red Raiders had a complete 180 degree turn in set five though and got off to a 8-1 start, which was too much to come back from in the end and the Red Raiders won it 15-9.

Zetic had her second double-double against a top ranked opponent on 16 kills and 16 digs, while Alvarez joined her in double-figures with 11 digs and 47 assists.

Iverson had a career-high with 14 kills in the match, while Dias and Pozza were also in double-digit offensive numbers at 12 and 10 kill performances.

It was a the second 30-plus dig match for the freshman Schwalm on the season and she reached 31 digs. Zetic and Schwalm were the only Pirates with multiple service aces at three and two, respectively.

Canak was also playing her role defensively with 10 digs for the match.

The Pirates are in Breckon Sports Center tonight against (RV) MidAmerica Nazarene University at 7pm. WATCH
