The Park University women's volleyball program was on the road in Atchison, Kan. on Friday night to play the Rravens Benedictine College. It was a close match as expected, but the Ravens edge Park in five sets, 3–2.
This is a rematch from last year's Heart Conference Semifinal, also played in Atchison, where the Ravens also won that match in five sets.
Park moves to 4–2 on the season and 1-1 in Heart of America Athletic Conference play. The Ravens go up to 2-1 in the Heart, but only sit at 3–6 on the season.
Park opened up the first set with a 6-3 lead, but the Ravens came back with 5-0 run, to turn the tables. The Ravens held the lead in the early going and Park tied Benedictine twice before taking the lead 15–14. Two timeouts ensued by head Coach
Michael Talamantes as the Ravens went onto a 6–0 scoring run. This made for the difference in set one and the Ravens would hold on for the first 25–21.
In the second set the Pirates had reverse fortunes and were able to answer back 25–19. Park got to work with a 9–5 lead and the Ravens rallied. Still, Park stayed strong for a 16–12 lead. Kills by
Angelina Rodriguez and
Visnja Canak, extended Park's lead by five, 18–13. The blocking by the Pirates was outstanding down the stretch,
Trinity Iverson and
Indi Zetic doubled up for two blocks late and in set two, and Iverson added a kill as well. The Ravens hung around on a couple of set points, but could not even the match.Canak ended set two with a kill, 25-19.
It was relatively close in at three as only a few points separated Benedictine from the Pirates at 10–7. No one could have anticipated the turn at three would take though, as an unanswered 10 points by Park made set three a landslide. There was a little recovery possible for the Ravens and they conceited set three, 25-11.
A 6-2 run midway through the fourth set helped the Ravens to a 17-11 lead. Two kills by Canak and a Zetic block got the Pirates within three points to force a Raven timeout. Benedictine pressed forward and earned a 23-19 advantage. Park nearly pulled the comeback with a 4-0 run to tie it at 23 and again alternated points with the Ravens to tie at points 24 and 25, but the Ravens were able to even the match 2-2 with a kill and a service ace to close out set four, 27-25.
Park had a 3-0 run to begin set five, but a 5-0 response by Benedictine is tough to overcome in a race to 15 points. Park tied the Ravens at 8-8 with a 3-0 run and even took the lead at 10-9. Benedictine immediately took that lead back and then the Pirates were playing catch up, tying the Ravens two more times before Benedictine closed out the match with a 15-13 win.
Park had a .211 attack percentage to just a .155 for the Ravens. The Pirates had two more aces at eight then Benedictine, but Park also had two more service errors with 10. Both teams blocked exceptionally well, Park with 18 block assists and Benedictine with 16.
Isadora Dias led Park with 16 kills and nine digs.
Jullia Alvarez was also close to a double-double with 52 assists and nine digs, while Canak reached the double-double mark with 14 kills and 10 digs.
Indi Zetic was a all around player for the Pirates with a double-double on 13 kills and 17 digs, but also contributed 7 total blocks. Iverson and
Elisa Dalla Pozza were up there in blocks as well with six and four, respectively.
Ella Schwalm had the second most digs for the team with 16.
