Park University's softball program after a two week break due to weather came back for their second series of the season against Kansas Wesleyan University on Tuesday, February 26 at Homefield Complex in Kansas City, Kan.
These games were originally slated to be played in Parkville, but inclement weather pushed these games to the turf at Homefield.
GAME 1 | L, 5-7 |
Box Score
The Coyotes jumped out in front with a single up the middle to score one. In the inning a lead-off walk got Kansas Wesleyan going, and then three more hits came in the inning, but
Lauren Fiene struck out two in the inning to limit anything further.
Her team had her back and a lead-off bunt single by
Caroline Riffer started Park's day offensively. A second bunt single moved Riffer to third after she stole a base. Another stolen base by Ramsey drew a throw down to second, which made it too easy for Riffer to score from third to tie the game. A wild pitch got Ramsey in scoring position, at which point a simple ground out by
Shelby Sanders put Park on top, 2-1.
Fiene would settle in and only allow one more unearned run in the fourth inning, closing her day with four strikeouts. Also in the fourth inning, senior, shortstop
Halle Magee earned her 301
st career assist putting her at the top of Park's all-time list for career assists.
Park added another two runs in the fourth to make it 4-2.
Ashton Arndt reached first on a passed ball after a swing and miss strike three, but the play also allowed Dani Quinn Klein McAlister to score. Riffer would drop one into centerfield for a single and then a big error by the centerfielder directed the ball back towards right center allowing, Arndt to come around to score and Riffer to reach third.
Five runs would come in for Kansas Wesleyan in the top of the sixth and seventh innings though to make it 7-4,
Myel White would go two innings allowing three hits and three walks.
Rori Hornung would get the seventh inning and allowed two unearned runs on two hits and an error to right field.
A double by Sanders gave some life to Park in the bottom of the seventh and then with two outs, McAlister singled to put Park within two runs, 7-5, but the Coyotes would close out the game the next batter for the game one win.
GAME 2 Â | W, 4-3 |
Box Score
Game two did not start like Park wanted to with a two-run second inning for the Coyotes, followed by another run tacked on to the forth to make it 3-0.
The Pirates' pitcher
Hanna Vaught helped her cause at the plate with a single through the right side in the bottom of the fourth inning and then two batters later, another freshman,
Emma Reed broke the silence with a two run home run to center field, her first collegiate home run in a big moment.
Reed had her third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Magee. The two of them both hail from Platte County High School and played a big role as this came went on.
Vaught settled in and tossed three more scoreless innings to earn the complete game on five strikeouts.
The Pirates did not disappoint in the seventh inning, as McAlister started it off with a single up the middle. Sanders drew a walk, which set up a good sacrifice bunt opportunity, executed well by
Chloe Gilbert. And none other than Magee stepped up to the plate delivering her third hit of the game, this one being a walk-off single up the middle to score McAlister ending the game 4-3.
