The Park University men's soccer program was at home to close out the regular season and to send the seniors off right on Senior Day. Saturday at Julian Field the Pirates put together a great game plan and came away with the 5-2 victory over the Mustangs.
The Pirates celebrated eight seniors,
Felipe Ramos,
Tomas Quintana,
Luka Andonovski,
Alfonso Vigna, Jacksyn McIntyre,
Grant Barry,
Francisco Reyes, and
Lorenzo Leone.
Park moved to 7-8-2 on the year with a 7-4-2 Heart of America Athletic Conference record to secure the No. 5 seed. This snaps a four game drought against the Mustangs and Park is now 1-4-1 against Mount Mercy. Park will be in their third consecutive Heart Quarterfinal matchup.
The scoring got started from the graduate, defender
Bradyn McIntyre who scored his second goal of the season on an assist from
Luka Andonovski in the 14th minute.
The Mustangs equalized in the 21st, but then another McIntyre brother would put the Pirates back ahead before halftime. Jacksyn got his 10th goal of the season on senior day in the 43rd minute on an assist by
Pedro Beserra.
With a 2-1 lead at the break, Park had three more shots than the Mustangs with 10 and Mount Mercy was staying in the game with five first half saves, while Ramos kept his team out front with two saves.Â
Park also had three more corner kick opportunities than the Mustangs with four in teh first half.Â
The scoring continued shortly after the second half whistle commenced play with a
Wayde Roman header in the 47th minute off of a throw in by Andonovski.Â
The senior Andonovski put the Pirates up by three goals with a his sixth goal of the season in the 56th minute, assisted by
Marcos Fernandes and
Pedro Beserra.Â
Samuele Pintossi, another graduate member of the Pirates, gave extra insurance in the 69th minute with his third goal of the year off of a second assist by Fernandes.
The Mustangs got back a goal in the 81st, but the game was well in control at that point by Park, 5-2.
Park had another 11 shots in the second half, finishing with 21 and had 14 shots on goal for the game. Meanwhile, the Mustangs had six second half shots for 13 shots in the contest with eight on goal.
Ramos finished the game with six saves to Mount Mercy's nine and corner kicks slowed down in the second half with one apiece for both sides.
The Pirates were needing William Penn to lose Saturday in order to have a Heart Quarterfinal game at Julian Field. Instead, the Pirates will be traveling to No. 4 William Penn University on Tuesday, November 4 for the opening Heart Tournament game in Oskaloosa, Iowa at 7:30pm.
