The Park University men's soccer program went from down a goal at half to a 5-3 win over Missouri Baptist University on Saturday over Park's 150th Homecoming weekend at Julian Field.
Park moves to 2-6-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while Missouri Baptist goes down to 2-5-3 and 1-3-2 of the same.
Park now owns a three match win-streak over the Spartans in the series, going back to the 2019 season in the American Midwest Conference.
Both sides put on a offensive display in this game, as a combined eight goals were scored. It began with a goal at the eight minute mark in the first half, as Missouri Baptist struck first in the game, 1-nil.
With 25 minutes on the clock,
Wayde Roman scored his first goal of the afternoon off an assist from
Luka Andonovski.
The Spartans answered back in the 35th minute to go up 2-1 and that's where the score stood after the first horn.
Let's talk about the play by the keepers in the first half though, both kept their team within striking distance with a combined nine saves.
Felipe Ramos had five in the first half alone and he tacked on three more saves in the second half. Meanwhile there were two goalies for the Spartans and they combined for five saves for the game.
Both sides matched one another shot for shot, literally. Park and Missouri Baptist had an even eight shots in the first half and seven in the second.
The Pirates were on a mission in the final 45 though, as the freshman
Angeluz Martins tacked on an equalizer at the 49 minute mark.
Then Roman got Park on top with a score assisted by
Alfonso Vigna at the 54 minute mark. The hat trick was secured five minutes later with Andonovski's second assist of the game.
The third goal by Roman and the third second half goal by the Pirates was exactly what they needed to hold on to the win.
Park and Missouri Baptist exchanged goals one last time, as Martins got a brace, the first of his career, in the 69th minute. The Spartans got the final goal of the day, but the clock was on Park's side as it went to final time two minutes later, 5-3.
Each team had three corners in the game and nine saves by Ramos and
Benjamin Nicolas secured the victory.
Park will be on the road in Marshall, Mo. on Saturday, October 4 at 7:30pm.
