The Park University women's soccer program began Heart of America Athletic Conference play on Saturday with Clarke University on Julian Field.
Aside from the conference opener, the Pirates also recognized the 136 scholar-athlete awards from this past Spring semester, some of which include NAIA Scholar-Athlete, Heart Scholar-Athlete, or even College Sports Communicators Academic All-District. Park was especially to acknowledge these accomplishments on Faculty Appreciation Day.
Back to the pitch though, the Pirates move down to 2-3-1 on the season with a 0-1 Heart record. The Pride will take the leg up on Park in the conference standings at 1-0 and are sitting at 4-1-2 on the year.
Park and the Pride were neck and neck through the first half with both sides having a relatively tame opening period. Clarke had six shots with five on goal in the first half, while the Pirates had two shots on goal of their four shots. Needless to say, nothing found the back of the net though for a nil-nil tie at half.
11 minutes into the second half, the Pride took the 1-nil lead off of an unassisted goal by Bailey Wiemann. Wiemann would earn the brace with her second goal at the 79 minute mark with an assist coming from Hailey Packer.
Park got four shots off with none on goal in the second half, while Clarke were starting to click with nine shots in the second half for seven more than the Pirates for the game, 15 to eight. The Pride also had five more shots on goal.
Before the game was out, Clarke tacked on the final goal of the event with five minutes left to play by Jayden Black and assisted by Onesty Lopez.
The Pirates will be on the road next against Benedictine in Atchison, Kan. at 5pm on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
