Park University's softball program had a successful home opener against William Woods University on Tuesday, defeating the Owls in two straight games, 4-1 and 6-1.
William Woods is now 5-13 on the season, while the sweep puts Park up to an 8-6 season record.
GAME 1 | W, 4-1 |
Box Score
Park was able to get three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a three-run home run from
Chloe Gilbert.
The score stayed at three-0 through the fifth inning thanks to excellent starting pitching by
Lauren Fiene, who had 13 strikeouts for the game, a new career-high. In her last two outings, Fiene has gone two complete games and has had a total of 25 strikeouts.
William Woods was able to get a solo home run in the top of the sixth, but a double down the leftfield line by
Emma James in the next half inning got that run back for a 4-1 lead. The Pirates were able to hold in the top of the seventh for the win.
Caroline Riffer,
Halle Magee, Gilbert,
Shelby Sanders, and James each had a hit to arrive at the five hits for the game.
Despite six hits by the Owls and three errors by the Pirates, William Woods stranded 12 runners on base.
GAME 2 | W, 6-1 |
Box Score
The Pirates were excellent from the circle as
Dakota Rau picked up where Fiene left off. Rau went a complete game as well and also only allowed one run.
It was a similar result in the bottom of the first in game two, as the Pirates put three runs up on the board. Gilbert played another big role in the inning with a double to score Kali Day, who also reached on a double. From there, Sanders had the big swing to dead center field for the two-run home run.
Three more runs came in to score in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch to score the fourth run, then Day had an RBI single, followed by Sander's sacrifice fly for the sixth run.
All of the Owls' runs on the day were scored in the top of the sixth and fortunately for the Pirates it was only one run both times.
Park had one more hit than William Woods in game two, but once again had multiple errors to the errorless Owls in two games.
The Pirates will play Haskell University on Tuesday, March 19 at 2pm for another home doubleheader at the Park Softball Complex.
