Park University's softball program earned the sweep of Haskell Indian Nations University on Tuesday at the Park Softball Complex, 10-2 and 2-0.
Now riding a five game win streak, The Pirates finish their non-conference portion of the season at 10-6, while Haskell is 0-12 on the year.
GAME 1 | W, 10-2 in 5 Innings |
Box Score
The game began with a solo home run by
Halle Magee in the bottom of the first for a quick 1-0 start for Park.
Haskell turned back around in the top of the second to take the lead with a two-RBI single up the middle to overtake Park, 2-1.
It wouldn't stay that way for long though as a five-run bottom of the second gave the lead back to the Pirates for good.
Shelby Sanders hit a solo home run of her own followed by an RBI double to left-center by
Emma James to make it 3-2. Magee was two-for-two at the plate with her second home run of the day in the bottom of the second, this time a three-run shot for a 6-2 lead.
With
Lauren Fiene in the circle the Pirates held off Haskell the rest of the way, as Fiene went four innings for the win on eight strikeouts. She now has 51 strikeouts for the season, as Park enters conference play.
Park would tack on two runs in the third and fourth innings to reach the eventual spread of 10-2. In the bottom of the third, Miranda LuMunyon and
Dani-Quinn Klein both doubled to score one run each. In the fourth, Magee hit a sacrifice fly which scored
Caroline Riffer on heads up baserunning, Magee's fifth RBI of the day. The final run was knocked in by Sanders who also doubled to bring in
Kal Day.
GAME 2 | W, 2-0 |
Box Score
It was very defensive in game two and multiple times Park was snubbed by Haskell's Sports Center type defensive plays. Park had six base runners left on base and only had two runs to show for their eight hits.
Chloe Gilbert was able to single in Magee in the bottom of the first though to get out to a 1-0 lead again in the second straight game.
It was up to
Dakota Rau to keep the game where it was on the scoreboard and she did just that in a complete game shutout of Haskell. Rau only allowed three hits, while striking out five in her fourth win of the season. The senior from Plattsburg, Mo. was cruising and went four innings, the second through the fifth, without having a baserunner reach safely.
An error to begin the bottom of the fifth opened the door for Park to score a second run on a ground out by Klein to bring in
Mya Lewis from third.
Despite doubles by Haskell in the sixth and seventh, Rau and the Pirates worked around the scare and sealed the win at 2-0.
Park plays No. 16 Grand View University to start Heart of America Athletic Conference play Thursday, March 21 at the Park Softball Complex at 2pm and 4pm.
