The Park University women's volleyball program was in Peru, Nebraska on Friday, defeating the Bobcats in four sets, 23-25, 25-17, 25-14, 27-25.
The Pirates go to 20-9 and 10-5 on the year, overall and in conference, while Peru State is now at 12-17 and 7-9.
Peru State had 13 kills in set one, the only time they had more production on the evening, and hit for a higher percentage than Park at .140 to .070. Peru State led by as much as six points at 22-16, but then had to fend off the Pirates who made a late run towards the end for a 25-23 win for the Bobcats.
Irene Verdino got Park going in set two with a service ace and after a Peru State run, the Pirates one-upped the Bobcats with a 10-0 run, which included five kills from the middle hitter
Trinity Iverson. The Bobcats had some fight towards the end of the set, but the Pirates still took care of business for a 25-17 win to even the match 1-1.
Two seniors,
Izabella Ceratti and
Aly Anderson, were big to start set three off with kills to give Park a 4-0 run. The Bobcats got two points back, but Park poured on a 6-0 run to control things at 10-2. The Pirates took advantage of another 6-0 run later in the set to go up 17-5.
Grecia Ung had three kills in that span. There was feeble resistance on the backend of the set, as Park won 25-14.
Peru State left it all out on the court in set four, making Park work for a win on the road. The Pirates had their second most kills in the match with 16 to Peru State's highest total in set four with 14 kills. Peru State took a 5-2 lead in the early going, but Park on a 5-1 run overtook the Bobcats 9-8. It was a gradual increase to the lead by Park and they held a six-point lead at 18-12. Peru State clawed back in it and came within one point at 19-18 and then again at 21-20, at which point Park called time. Park could not shake the Bobcats in that moment, as they tied the match four different times before two back-to-back kills by Iverson ended the match 27-25.
Park had three players in double-digit scoring, including Ceratti at 15 kills, and then Ung and Iverson matched one another at 13 kills. Iverson, in her first season at Park, matched her season high in kills in a match.
Aly Anderson nearly went for a double-double with seven kills and 16 digs, while Verdino had a great defensive match as well with 19 digs.
Jullia Alvarez earned 34 assists on the match, while
Angelina Rodriguez contributed 10 assists.
