The Park University women's volleyball program traveled to Lamoni, Iowa on Saturday for an evening match with the Yellowjackets of Graceland University, sweeping the home team 25-18, 25-19, 25-16.
Park is now 21-9 on the season with an 11-5 Heart of America Athletic Conference record, placing them No. 5 in the standings going into the final regular season match. Graceland has had a tougher time and are 5-23 and 2-15 of the same.
There are many scenarios that can playout in the Heart Tournament seeding, depending on several outcomes around the league tonight.
It was a little slower start for Park as they got behind 7-1 in set one, but a 9-3 helped restore order at 10-10. From there a service error and a double block from two seniors,
Amra Kovac and
Grecia Ung, gave the Pirates their first lead, 12-11. From there Park got settled in and before you knew it they were ahead by six, 18-12. It was a group effort with kills coming from seven different Pirates in the set and they would cruise in for the 25-18 win in set one.
The Yellowjackets countered a bit in set two as Park had to tie it at 4-4 right before a 5-0 run gave Graceland a 9-4 lead. Another run by Park ensued and then Anderson tied the match with a service ace, 12-12. Park stayed on the offensive and got three more points for a 15-12 lead. Graceland was able to tie the set at 15 after the timeout, but the Pirates backed that up with a 3-0 run of their own and with the late momentum took set two, 25-19.
Graceland came back from a two-point deficit, 7-5, and grabbed a 9-7 lead with a 4-0 run. Park seemed to have the answer every time though, as two separate 4-0 and 3-0 runs restored a 14-11 lead. A 10-1 flurry of points ended the match in a hurry, 25-16.
Iverson and Ung led the Pirates in kills with seven, followed by
Izabella Ceratti and
Avery Caskey with six and five.
Aly Anderson and
Grecia Ung led the way defensively with 14 and 11 digs, while Alvarez nearly hit the double-double standard with 12 assists and nine digs.
Angelina Rodriguez was also close to a double-double with 14 assists and nine digs.
Seven blocks by
Amra Kovac for the Pirates put a stop to most attacks up the middle, three of those were solo blocks from Kovac.
The Pirates will battle No. 21 Central Methodist University on Claude English Court on Tuesday night at 7pm. The 10 Park seniors will be honored prior to the match at 6:30pm.
