Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Pirates Avenge Loss to Vikings with a Sweep in the Pink Out Game

The (RV) Park University women's volleyball team returned to Breckon Sports Center for their penultimate home regular season game against the Missouri Valley College Vikings. The matchup saw the home crowd decked out in pink as Park hosted their annual pink out game for breast cancer awareness month. Park would use this crowd to even the season series against the Vikings with a three set sweep 25-14, 25-14, 25-21.

This victory improved Park to 19-9 overall and 9-5 in conference play. Park only needs one more victory to extend their twenty win season streak to fourteen consecutive seasons. This loss dropped Missouri Valley to .500 on the season with a 14-14 record and a 6-9 record in Heart Conference action. Every match at this point is crucial for conference seeding with the new division format in play.

Momentum was on the Pirates side early when the opening Vikings serve into the net was followed by an overpass sent back by Izabella Ceratti. This helped the Pirates jump out to a 4-0 lead that was backended by a strong strike from Trinity Iverson. Later on, Danilea Gomez followed up an off speed kill with a great defensive save that held off a Vikings push to even the set.

With the opening set score at 8-5 in favor of the Pirates, Park would make a line change that resulted in several long rallies with some dazzling defensive stands from Aly Anderson to keep the Viking offense at bay. Missouri Valley had nine total errors in the first set, and that would become a major factor at this point. These errors culminated with an ace by Irene Verdino that gave Park a 16-9 lead and resulted in a Vikings timeout.

Ceratti hit a cross court shot out of the timeout and Park finished off their 16-6 run to close out set one 25-14.

The second set opened with a disputed call that was first ruled a kill for Park before a net touch was determined to have occurred from Anderson. This seemed to inspire the Vikings to play more competitive ball against Park, and the early set was back and forth, with multiple lead changes, before settling at a 6-6 tie. Avery Caskey started to heat up with a couple kills and Amra Kovac sent a rejection to the Viking hardwood.

It was Gomez and Ceratti's turn next, and they started a kill fest that saw the Pirate lead grow to five points at 12-7. This prompted the first Vikings timeout of the set and Kovac immediately followed it up with a precision block. The Park crowd started really getting into the game at this point and it erupted when Julia Alvarez utilized a dump that had velocity closer to a power spike.

Gomez picked up a block of her own right after and Missouri Valley called their second timeout down 18-7. Momoko Yokoyama picked up Missouri Valley's first ace of the match, but Park would cruise to a 25-14 set two win that was finished off with a kill from Grecia Ung in her first match back from injury.

Set three saw Park get out to the lead once again at 3-2 following an Angelina Rodriguez ace. However, the Vikings would not go quietly in the third set. A couple attacking errors by Park combined with better hitting by the Vikings saw the visitors go up 10-9 midway through the set. An errant serve from Menica Medio looked like it may have been a turning point, but the Vikings held a two point lead at 15-13 when Park used their second timeout. The lead would grow to three, but Park responded with a 3-0 run that included a cross court spike by Anderson and another Gomez ace to tie set three at sixteen each. Later on, a 20-20 tie was broken by a lift called on Missouri Valley that preceded a strike into the antenna. Another Ceratti spike followed, so the Vikings were forced to call a timeout now down 23-20. Out of the timeout, a Viking attack error put Missouri Valley against the brink, and the match was closed out with another block by Kovac.

Notables:

Ceratti was the only player with double digit kills on either side, leading the match with fourteen.

Rodriguez and Alvarez split time at the setter position and had the two highest assist totals for the match with twenty-one and eighteen respectively.

Verdino led the match with seventeen digs and picked up an ace in the match as well.

Kovac and Iverson came alive on the defensive end and totaled three blocks each.

The Pirates out hit the Vikings by a considerable margin .320 compared to .078 and had less total errors with 21 versus 24 Missouri Valley errors.

Park will head out on their final road trip of the season for a matchup with Peru State on Friday, November 1. Watch Here
