Park University's softball program went head-to-head with Heart of America Athletic Conference opponent, MidAmerica Nazarene University on Friday, ending in two late inning rallies by the Pioneers for the sweep, 6-1 and 5-2.
The Pirates are near .500 on the season at 12-11, while dropping in Heart play to 1-5. MidAmerica Nazarene came into the game with a similar record but is now 14-8 and 4-2 in the conference.
Only six hits were mustered by Park in the series, while the Pioneers were in double-digit hits each game. No Pirate hitter had multiple hits on the day, as all six hits were recorded by different players. Both teams had two errors through two games.
Each staff had five strikeouts against opposing batters. MidAmerica's Grace Berlage stole the show though with two wins on the day, pitching 11 innings with only one earned run allowed between two games.
GAME 1 BOX SCORE | 4-6
The Pirates began game one with
Macee Austin reaching on a hit by pitch. After getting moved over by a sacrifice bunt by Dani Klein,
Kali Day struck Park's lone double on the afternoon to score Austin in the bottom of the first.
Adrianna Solary pitched five quality innings for Park and only allowed two earned runs in her outing. The Pioneers tied things up in the fourth inning, but then four straight Pioneers reaching in the top of the sixth resulted in two runs coming in. The top of the sixth saw three Pirate pitchers in the circle, Solary,
Nia Muniz, and
Dakota Rau.
The sixth tilted to MidAmerica Nazarene as a total of five runs came in on seven hits and MidAmerica Nazarene earned the 6-1 victory.
GAME 2 BOX SCORE | 4-6
Lauren Fiene pitched game two for Park and held the Pioneers scoreless through five innings. She pitched her fifth complete game of the season and struck out three hitters.
The bottom of the third was Park's best offensive inning, capitalizing on three walks and an error in the inning for two runs. Dani Klein ripped a hit up the middle for the first run of the game and then with the bases loaded Day was walked bringing in the second run.
Things got interesting in the sixth inning, as two runs tied the game for the Pioneers on four hits. The Pirates were poised to answer in the bottom half of the inning with bases loaded and no outs, but those three runners were left stranded as Berlage got a pop up, a force out at the plate on a suicide squeeze play, and a spectacular play up the middle by the shortstop for the final force out at second.
Back to back doubles in the top of the seventh gave the Pioneers their first lead of the game and before the dust settled, the Pioneers added two more runs for the 5-2 victory.
Park has an immediate turnaround tomorrow, April 1 against Culver-Stockton College at the Park Softball Complex at 1pm.
