Park University's softball program now has four games under their belt in the Heart of America Athletic Conference with their second conference series coming against William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Park is a respectable 12-7 on the season with a 1-3 record to begin Heart play. The Statesmen are now 11-15 and 4-2 in conference matchups.
Between both games, each team had 11 hits for the doubleheader.
Emma James was the only Pirate to have three hits on the day, while
Macee Austin and
Kali Day co-led the Pirates with two RBI's.
The freshman from Park Hill High School,
Nia Muniz impressed with the stick as the only Pirate to have multiple extra-base hits with a double and triple.
It only took two starters to move through the Statesmen batters with zero earned runs allowed between
Adrianna Solary and
Lauren Fiene.
GAME 1 BOX SCORE | 0-1
It was a quiet game from both sides in game one, as pitching got the best of the Pirate and Statesmen batters. Solary had three strikeouts, while William Penn struck out five.
A two out walk in the bottom of the first inning appeared harmless, until the next batter shot a ball to right field and reached on an error. With two outs the runner at first was off with the pitch and came all the way around to score an unearned run.
This would be the only run of the game and despite a complete game, six-inning performance by Solary, the Pirates fell 1-0.
James broke up the no-hitter in the third inning with a single. In the fifth inning, a walk and a single got Park rolling, but an outfield assist from centerfield to third base cut down
Gracie Erickson while trying to advance.
GAME 2 BOX SCORE | 8-0
The second game was a reawakening for the Pirate bats as eight hits was enough to score eight runs.
All four of Park's extra-base hits came in game two. Day and Austin doubled besides Muniz in the game.
There were zeros on the board through two innings.
Lauren Fiene in the circle for Park had a sensational outing and only walked one and struck out five Statesmen. She had her fourth complete game of the season and earned her fifth win.
The Pirates backed up Fiene with a huge five-run inning in the top of the third.
Like the lone run in game one, a walk was the spark for the offense.
Lexie Schroeder led off the third with a walk and then was driven in by Austin's double to left field.
A two-out walk was issued to
Halle Magee, setting up Day's double to bring home Austin. The next three batters got RBI base-hits, including Shelby Sander's RBI single, James' RBI single, and Muniz' RBI double. Park batted around in the inning with four two-out runs on four two-out hits. Altogether Park led by 5 at the end of the third.
In the top of the fourth, Day drew the walk with the bases loaded to go up, 6-0.
Ensuring the 8-0 spread in the top of the fifth was Austin who grounded out for an RBI and Magee who singled up the middle to drive in
Paige McPheeters.
The Pirates will get off the bus from Oskaloosa and play No. 20 Ottawa University on Wednesday, March 29 for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1pm.
