Park University's women's basketball program played their final game of the 2022-23 season on Saturday against (RV) Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa. The Pirates fell in their last game, 79-64.
The Pirates' record finishes at 5-23 on the season with a 3-20 Heart record, while the Vikings improve to 22-7 and 18-5 of the same.
Three Pirates ventured into double-digits against a formidable opponent, including
Donetria McGee,
Kate Sokolova, and
Laney Lupe. McGee put up a big number in the last regular season game with 20 points, going four-of-10 from the field and 12-of-16 from the free-throw line. McGee is also the only Pirate on the year to average over 10 points a game with 11.6 points per game.
McGee almost broke into double-double numbers, but settled for a team-leading eight rebound.
Sokolova and Lupe were great in the contest with 13 and 11 points, respectively. They both were able to rain down the majority of Park's three-point makes with three apiece.
Park held their own in the first quarter, as McGee led the way with Park's first six points of the game. Sokolova and
Dar'Juanah Harris were both helpful with a pair of made free-throws to close out the quarter, 14-10.
The second quarter was the turning point though, as a 7-2 run started off the second period and did not stop there. Grand View eventually built up a 26-point second quarter and led 40-18 at the half.
Despite Park outscoring the Vikings with 23 points in the third and fourth quarters, the Vikings did enough to keep their lead for the win, 79-64.
The Pirates matched the Vikings in three-point makes with seven and shot at a higher three-point percentage at 31.8-percent to the Vikings' 28-percent.
For the game though, Park was out shot from the field at 44.8-percent to 35.1-percent. The Pirates were above their 54.9 points per game season average and slightly above their season average in field goal percentage at 33.7-percent.
Grand View only had three less turnovers than Park, but they were able to turn those into 11 more points at 24 compared to Park's 13.
