Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

The Pirates Win Three Straight After Triumphing Over Baker, 64-60

Park University's women's basketball program traveled to Baldwin City, Kan. on Wednesday evening in their Heart of America Athletic Conference matchup with Baker University and held on for the win over the Wildcats, 64-60.

Park has been trending in the right direction with their third straight win and their second consecutive win in the Heart. Their record rises to 5-3 on the year and 2-2 in conference play, while Baker is still clawing for their firs win at 0-9 and 0-5 in conference games.

This ends Park's eight game drought against the Wildcats in the previous eight contests going back to November 9, 2012.

Park fell in line with their season scoring average of 64 points per game against the Wildcats and shot over 42-percent from the floor as a team in their last two games.

Taylor Shelby got the scoring started with a three-point field goal, the second game in a row that she earned the game's first points by a three-pointer. Makayla Artis backed her up with a two-point basket to start the game with a 5-0 run. Both sides exchanged additional five-point swings and Park led 10-5 at 4:56 off of the second Shelby three-point shot. Shelby would have nine-points for the quarter and was a perfect three-of-three from beyond the arc in the opening quarter of play. In the last 5:35 Park ran it up with a 15-4 scoring differential over Baker for a 20-9 lead to begin the second quarter.

Eden Billups-Campbell continued the run into the second quarter with a two-point basket to give Park a 22-9 lead. The Pirates kept their distance with Baker and Iva Drobnjak began to come alive in the second quarter with an and-one to put Park up 27-13 at 5:38. Artis and Angel Wiggins combined for a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 33-16 with 3:09 remaining in the half. Before the half was out, Drobjnak sank a three-pointer and free throw to lead Park with nine points in the second quarter, as the Pirates reached their largest lead of the game at 18, 41-23.

The Pirates scored 20 or more points in the first two quarters, but Baker would hold Park to only 23 points combined in the second half. A 5-0 run began the third quarter for Baker bringing the score to 41-28. Four third quarter three-pointers were hit by the Wildcats to boost them and they shot 45.5-percent from the field in the third quarter. A 7-0 run for Baker helped them get back within single-digits at 5:59, 43-35. Emma Perry answered with a three-point shot of her own to stymie the Wildcat run. In the last 2:47 of the third quarter, Billups-Campbell scored five points to help Park maintain a 13-point advantage, 54-41.

Park would not score until 4:54 on the clock in the 4th quarter, as Baker went on a big 9-0 run to come within four, 54-40. Park did just enough to hold off Baker who nearly gave Park a scare with another 5-0 run for a 60-58 score with 52 seconds remaining. At 62-60, the Wildcats had the ball to potentially tie, but good defense on a contested shot kept Baker at bay. Two free-throws from Artis sealed the game 64-60.

Park had 19 turnovers in the game and Baker scored 17 points from them, while Baker coughed it up 15 times which amounted to 21 points for the Pirates.

The Pirates were favored in second chance points with 15 to Baker's six. Park got much production from their full lineup as 20 points came in off the bench.

While Baker had an advantage from beyond the arc at nine-of-20 compared to five-of-14 for Park, the Pirates cashed in from the strike with a 17-of-23 night to Baker's 13-of-22.
Billups-Campbell led the scoring effort with 13 points on a five-of-11 day.

Impressively, three other Pirates were in double-figure scoring including Drobnjak and Shelby with 11 points, and Artis with 10.

Perry was just under 10 points at eight for the game and led the rebounding totals with seven.

Wiggins and Perry were both active defensively with three and two steals, respectively.

Park moves on to their matchup with Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday, December 2 at 12pm. WATCH
