Park University's women's basketball program took on Mount Mercy University on Saturday, falling to the Mustangs in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, 84-47.
Park goes to 5-4 on the year and are now even in the Heart of America Athletic Conference at 3-3. The Mustangs move up to 5-3 and 3-2 of the same.
Iva Drobjnak got Park on the board with a three-pointer at the 8:00 minute mark, but it was not before Mount Mercy took a 6-0 lead to begin the game. Over the next four minutes a 13-0 run would be brought on by Mount Mercy for a 19-3 lead. Over the last four minutes of the first quarter Park would outscore Mount Mercy 10-9, but the damage was done at 28-13 at the end of the quarter. Mount Mercy's field-goal percentage soared at 68-percent in the first quarter compared to only 25-percent by Park.
Neither team would score until 2:45 into the second quarter with a three-pointer by Mount Mercy for a 31-13 lead. Mount Mercy and Park played a close second quarter and Park kept the Mustangs from having a scoring run larger than three-points. At 3:46, Mount Mercy took a 21-point lead after a made three-point shot, 40-19. In response,
Taylor Shelby nailed a three-pointer of her own, which was the start of a 7-0 run for the Pirates. After Shelby's shot,
Angel Wiggins had four points in the 7-0 run to make the score 40-26 with a 1:17 left in the quarter. Wiggins would lead Park in the second quarter with eight points and finished with 14 for the day. Going into halftime, the Pirates were down 45-28.
It was another 6-0 run by Mount Mercy to begin the third quarter and Park did not break the dry spell until 7:13 with an and-one by Shelby. For most of the third quarter the Mustangs were working with at least a 20-point lead.
Kate Sokolova sunk a free-throw to go along with an
Eden Billups-Campbell layup for a three-point run for Park at 3:40 to go in the third quarter, 59-38. An 8-0 run would close out the third quarter for the Mustangs though for a 67-38 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Park was held to its lowest point total of the afternoon at nine, while Mount Mercy did not score below 17 points in a single quarter. Park shot 28.6-percent for the game, while the Mustangs were at an even 50-percent. There was a nine point advantage from the free-throw line for the Mustangs, while also having double the number of made three-pointers with eight. When the final horn sounded, the final score from Cedar Rapids was 84-47.
The Pirates had three more points off turnovers with 17 to the Mustangs' 14. Mount Mercy had four more turnovers with 21 for the game.
Zero second chance points were scored by Park, which was a dramatic difference with 16 of the same for the Mustangs.
Wiggins tied her career-high in points in a game with 14, going back to last year's game against Doane on November 5.
Sheridan Curley did a nice job off the bench and scored seven points, a new career-high by the sophomore from Kayenta, Ariz.
Rounding out the scoring were Drobnjak with seven, Shelby with six, and Sokolova with six.
The Pirates will regroup for their home game against Missouri Valley College on Wednesday, December 6 at 5:30pm in Breckon Sports Center.
