Box Score The Park University women's basketball program was in Olathe, Kan. on Wednesday night against No. 11 MidAmerica Nazarene University. The Pioneers held Park down in the early going and carried the lead to the final buzzer, 77-45.
Park drops to 8-14 on the year with a 3-12 Heart of America Athleic Conference record, while the Pioneers are looking the part at 18-3 and at the top of the conference at 14-1.
There would be a couple lead changes early, as
Nevaeh Spillman and
Marina Perdiguero got the Pirates off to a 4-3 start. The next six minutes would be a drought for Park though and the Pioneers took the 15-4 first quarter lead. There would be five Park turnovers in that span.
Perdiguero ended the silence in the second quarter with a two-pointer, but the Pioneers had already climbed to a 17-6 lead. The combination of Spillman and
Charleece Davis worked Park into a five-point game, but MidAmerica Nazarene was able to finish the second quarter with an 11-point lead, 28-17.
A 6-0 run by the Pioneers put Park in a difficult spot down 17, 34-17. Perdiguero finished strong as Park's leading scorer with 11 points, and Spillman and
Nadiyah Cooper were a good supporting cast with eight and seven points to contribute. Even with good effort down the stretch, the Pioneers would continue building into the night for a 77-45 win.
Both Spillman and Perdiguero led Park with six rebound, three of those rebounds were offensive for Spillman. Meanwhile,
Jordan Bianco did good work with five rebounds and two steals.
Davis was next in scoring with six points and she led the Pirates with three steals, two assists, and a block.
Alexus Woodard had a respectable night with six points and five boards for the senior.
The Pioneers shot 51-percent on the night with an effective seven-of-22 from deep, while the Pirates were scratching 31-percent and were 0-of-10 from behind the arc.
The Pioneers had the free-throw advantage at 12-of-20, while Park was at seven-of-10.
Park did good to help force 12 Pioneer turnovers, but equally the Pioneers put pressure for 18 Park turnovers. Both teams were in double-digit points off turnovers, 17 for MidAmerica Nazarene and 10 for the Pirates.
Park will look to host Clarke University on Saturday, February 7 at 12pm in Breckon Sports Center.
