The No. 8 nationally ranked Park University men's volleyball team was in Breckon Sports Center on Friday night with Oakland City University. The Pirates downed the Mighty Oaks in four sets, 25-15, 25-21, 21-25, 25-15.
Park moved to 6-0 on the year, while Oakland City went to 1-2.
Coming into the match Oakland City already went four sets with the NAIA's No. 3 team, St. Thomas University (Fla.), so they had a tough opponent under their belt already.
The Pirates also came in with a ranked match and demonstrated why they themselves are an NAIA top 10 team. In set one, Park got off to a 11-5 start, but a 7-2 run quickly amounted to a 10 point advantage, 18-8. Park finished off the first set 25-15 without much difficulty.
Another 4-0 run by Park helped get the Pirates a lead in set two, 13-7, including kills by seniors
Mihailo Ivanovic and
Veljko Stojic. The Mighty Oaks were able to get within two points at 22-20, but kills by
Adrian Figueroa and
Murillo Silva made a way for Park's 25-21 win.
Eight ties took place in set three, but the Mighty Oaks with some late charge, overtook Park 25-21. A good response though by the Pirates in set four with a 9-2 start soon would seal the four set win, 25-15. With a .583 hitting percentage in set four, the Pirates would hit nearly .400 for the match at .398.
Figueroa led the Pirates with 19 kills, seven digs, and three blocks. Silva was another weapon for Park with 13 kills, three service aces, and two blocks.
Stojic was in double-figure kills with 11 and did his part defensively with six digs.
Jovan Nikolic was the primary setter on the evening with 43 assists and six digs.
Ivanovic led the Pirates with six blocks and
Rodrigo Macedo kept the ball off the hardwood with seven digs.
Park looks to face NCAA Division II opponent Missouri S&T tonight in Breckon Sports Center at 6pm.
