The Park University men's baskeball program was in Oskaloosa, Iowa on Saturday against the Statesmen of William Penn University, falling to William Penn 105-88.
Park moves to 9-13 on the year with a 6-8 Heart of America Athletic Conference record, while the Statesmen jump to 18-5 and 12-3 in the Heart.
This season, the Heart of America Athletic Conference is using a Point Rating System, or PRS, to help determine postseason qualification. The eight teams with the highest PRS at the end of the regular season will qualify for the conference postseason tournament. The Pirates were largely in this game with the Statesmen through the first half and only trailed seven going into the locker room, 49-42. There were only two ties in the game though and zero lead changes after the opening tip.
The Pirates found themselves down eight points with 12:25 in the first half, but important sets of free-throws were hit by
Abubakar Kromah and
Mannie Odo, and then a layup by Jamal Davis for the 6-0 run, bringing Park within two points of the Statesmen 25-23. After much back and forth, a three by Kromah at 4:22 got Park back within two points at 36-34, but William Penn continued to evade Park with back-to-back threes to go up six.Â
A 7-0 run within five minutes of the second half put the Statesmen in a favorable position 63-48 with 15:49 to go. Park's scoring slowed up a bit with only 37-percent from the field in the second half compared to 65-percent from William Penn. With that opposition, it gave little opportunity for a Pirate comeback, as William Penn went on to a 105-88 win.
For the game, Park shot 45-percent compared to 57-percent for William Penn. Park was four-of-11 from deep, while William Penn hit on 12-of-27.
Park had plenty attempts from the free-throw line, but left points on the board at 24-of-37. The Statesmen shot at a slightly better percentage at 15-of-22.
The Statesment had 10 turnovers, amounting to 12 Park points off turnovers. The Pirates took care fo the ball with only seven turnovers, resulting in six points for the Statesmen.
Kromah led Park with 22 points and had four assists, while
Tyler Burrows was next up with 18 points.Â
Armani had 11 points for the game with an average five rebounds, while
Jamaal Davis was the Park rebound leader with six boards and eight points.
Bayley Crawford from the bench put up a helpful 10 points and was the only Pirate with two steals and a block.
Park plays MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan. tonight at 7:30pm.
