The Pirates Hit 4 New Qualifying Marks and 3 New Park Records at Washburn Open

2/3/2026 3:57:00 PM

The Park University indoor track & field program was in Topeka, Kan. on Friday and Saturday for the Washburn Open, hosted by Washburn University. The Pirates once again put their best foot forward with four new NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship qualifiers and three Park indoor school records.

The distance events were a strength for the Pirates over the weekend with Cayden Walker securing the 5,000m record and the sophomore turned in his first indoor national qualifying time of 14:40.87. At the Washburn Open, Walker's time was good enough for 15th place.

The men's distance medley relay of Palmer O'Connor, Chase Housh, Cody Hammond, and Caden Peters also secured a Park indoor of 10:07.87, which was also below the NAIA B standard for a national qualifying time. The young group, with only one senior in Housh among them, took 4th at the meet.

Peters is left his mark on two records over the weekend and came back on Saturday to claim the mile record at 4:18.59 for 39th place.

The sprinters were also hitting their stride as Mya Charles and Sam Thomas both reached the semis in the 60m dash. Charles would go on to hit the NAIA B standard in the 200m as well for for 20th place in a time of 24.95. Charles is coming off of 2025 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field qualifications for the 4x100m, 100m, and the 200m, where she and her team reached NAIA All-American status in the 4x100m. Previously this year, she has already attained the qualifying standard in the 60m.

Ahmad Evans also previously qualified for nationals in long jump in the opening meet, but now adds the triple jump to his list of events at nationals, taking 9th in the meet with a 14.45m jump for the B standard.

Park's Rosjai Curtis also impressed in the women's triple jump for 6th place with a distance of 11.61m, which was a big part of her Heart Field Athlete of the Week award, announced yesterday.

Park split time this upcoming weekend at the Iowa State Classic on Friday in Ames, Iowa and Saturday's Bearcat Classic in Maryville, Mo. at Northwest Missouri State University. See the full results to the Washburn Open in the link or in the table below.
