Park Women’s Soccer Falls to Central Methodist in Late-Match Battle

Maddy Farris and Lilli Porsch score in the second half, but Central Methodist answers Park’s equalizer and holds on for a conference victory

FAYETTE, Mo. — Park University women's soccer mounted a second-half comeback attempt Saturday, but Central Methodist University scored twice after halftime to hand the Pirates a narrow 3-2 defeat in Heart of America Athletic Conference play.

After trailing 1-0 at halftime, Park pulled even through Maddy Farris in the 69th minute. Central Methodist responded just over three minutes later, then added another goal in the 85th minute to regain control. Lilli Porsch converted a penalty kick late in the match, but the Pirates ran out of time to complete the comeback.

Central Methodist finished with a 20-8 advantage in shots and an 11-6 edge in shots on target. Park goalkeeper Frankie Williams made six saves to keep the Pirates within reach throughout the match. The result left Park at 3-9-2 overall and 3-6-2 in conference play, while Central Methodist improved to 11-3-1 and 9-1-1 in the Heart.

First Half: Central Methodist Strikes First

Central Methodist applied early pressure and earned a corner kick in the 11th minute. The opportunity quickly turned into the opening goal.

At 10:36, Belen Castillo assisted Madison Davis, who found the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The early breakthrough forced Park to chase the match, but the Pirates continued working for an equalizer.

Park created a promising chance in the 19th minute when Hailey Peters put a shot on target. Central Methodist goalkeeper Amber Bennett made the save, preventing the Pirates from drawing level.

The Eagles continued to threaten at the other end. Tilde Dessle sent an attempt high in the 17th minute, and Jenna Brouwer tested Williams in the 36th minute. Williams came up with the save to keep the deficit at one.

Park nearly found its breakthrough just before halftime. In the 43rd minute, Leticia Quadros struck the crossbar, denying the Pirates a potential equalizer. Porsch followed with a header that sailed high, and Central Methodist maintained its 1-0 advantage at the break.

Despite trailing, Park had shown it could create dangerous opportunities against the Eagles, setting the stage for a more open second half.

Second Half: Farris Brings Park Level

Central Methodist came out aggressively after halftime, with Castillo putting a header on target in the 47th minute. Williams made the save, and the Pirates continued to withstand pressure as the Eagles searched for a second goal.

Park also began pushing forward. Preslee Zeigler put a shot on target just before the hour mark, but Bennett kept the Pirates off the scoreboard.

The Eagles generated another dangerous sequence in the 61st minute when Brouwer put two shots toward goal. Park's defense blocked both attempts, preventing Central Methodist from extending its lead. Davis then sent a shot wide to the right as the Pirates remained within striking distance.

That persistence paid off in the 69th minute.

At 68:23, Peters supplied the assist for Farris, who finished to tie the match at 1-1. The goal gave Park renewed life after spending much of the second half defending against the Eagles' pressure.

For a brief moment, the Pirates had erased the halftime deficit and put themselves in position to challenge one of the conference's leading teams.

Eagles Answer Quickly

Park's equalizer did not hold for long.

At 72:01, Davis scored her second goal of the match to restore Central Methodist's lead at 2-1. The quick response erased the momentum Park had gained from Farris' goal and forced the Pirates to pursue another equalizer.

Williams continued to face pressure as the Eagles looked to add insurance. She saved a header from Maren Zubillaga in the 74th minute, then stopped additional attempts from Zubillaga and Beatrice Aime later in the half.

Park created a chance of its own when Farris put a shot on target in the 75th minute, but Bennett made the save. The Pirates were unable to turn that opportunity into another goal, and Central Methodist continued to threaten on the attack.

The Eagles finally created a two-goal cushion in the 85th minute. Brouwer assisted Castillo at 84:07, giving Central Methodist a 3-1 advantage with less than six minutes remaining in regulation.

The goal put Park in a difficult position, but the Pirates continued to fight.

Porsch Converts Late Penalty

Park found one final opening in the closing minutes.

At 87:57, Porsch converted a penalty kick to cut the deficit to 3-2. The goal gave the Pirates a late chance to salvage a result after Central Methodist had appeared to put the match away.

With the margin back to one, Park needed another breakthrough in the final minutes. Williams made one more save against Brouwer in the 89th minute, but the Pirates could not find a third goal before time expired.

Central Methodist held on for the 3-2 victory, surviving Park's late push.

Williams Keeps the Pirates in the Match

Although Park came away without the result, Williams played an important role in keeping the game competitive. The goalkeeper recorded six saves as Central Methodist put 11 shots on target.

Park's defense also blocked two attempts from Brouwer during a dangerous stretch in the second half. Those stops prevented the Eagles from extending their lead before Davis scored the go-ahead goal.

Offensively, Farris scored Park's first goal and Peters earned the assist. Porsch added the late penalty kick, while Quadros came close to scoring in the first half when her shot struck the crossbar.

Central Methodist's attack was led by Davis, who scored twice, and Castillo, who finished with a goal and an assist. Brouwer contributed two assists and consistently created opportunities for the Eagles.

The statistical difference was significant: Central Methodist recorded 20 shots to Park's eight and earned five corner kicks while limiting the Pirates to none. Park's ability to stay within one goal late, however, made the finish competitive.

The Takeaway

Park showed resilience by erasing its halftime deficit and drawing level through Farris, but Central Methodist's quick response proved decisive. Davis restored the Eagles' lead shortly after the equalizer, and Castillo's late goal created enough separation to withstand Porsch's penalty kick.

The Pirates had opportunities to change the match, particularly Quadros' first-half shot off the crossbar and Farris' equalizer in the second half. Williams also delivered several important saves, keeping Park in contention as Central Methodist pressed forward.

Ultimately, the Eagles' greater shot volume and ability to answer Park's comeback goals made the difference. Park will look to build on its second-half attacking response as it continues its conference schedule.

Final: Central Methodist 3, Park 2
