The Park University women's basketball program hosted the Vikings of (RV) Grand View University on Wednesday evening in Breckon Sports Center. In the first bout of action at home in 2026, the Pirates fell behind in the second half ending at 71-45.
The Pirates fall to 7-9 on the year with a 2-7 Heart record, while the Vikings shoot up to 12-6 and 9-1 in the Heart. The Pirates now stand at 11th in the conference, still chasing a top eight spot for a conference tournament berth.
The Vikings shot ahead in the first quarter 25-8, shooting 47-percent from the field, while Park had a slow start at only three-of-18 in the first quarter. A 12-2 run began the game for the Vikings and
Charleece Davis got Park's first field-goal make at the 4:55 mark to make it 12-4.Â
The Pirates got back to the quality defensive game we are used to in the second quarter and pressured the Vikings to only a six-point second quarter. Eight turnovers for the Vikings slowed their offensive pace down, while Davis and
Nevaeh Spillman got the offense moving with a combined 11 points in the second quarter of the team's 13 second quarter points. The quarter was highlighted by an 8-0 run over the first five minutes to put Park in a 10-point game at the half, 31-21.
A 7-2 run for the Vikings is how the third quarter began, over the first 3:47, to make it 38-23. Where the Vikings went cold from deep in the second quarter, they made up for it with back-to-back threes by the 5:01 mark to make it 45-26. Alternating scores by both sides to end the quarter sent the game to the fourth quarter at 51-32.Â
Madison Hill hit a three in the fourth quarter that spurred on a 5-0 run after a
Nadiyah Cooper lay-in to make it a 16-point game at 8:02. A 10-2 run going up to the 5:12 mark was a tough blow and all but sealed up the win for the Vikings, 71-45.Â
The Vikings shot 39-percent from the field, while Park was at 29-percent. Grand View chucked up 20 more threes than Park with seven more made three-pointers to show for it, nine to Park's two. Free-throws also sided with Grand View with a 10-of-15 night compared to an efficient five-of-eight for the Pirates.
Both teams were at 20 or more turnovers for the game. Park had two more turnovers with 20, leading to 14 Grand View points, while the Pirates converted eight points from Grand View turnovers.
The Pirates got into transition more with 10 fastbreak points, four more points than Grand View in transition.
Production from the bench sided heavily with the Vikings though at 21 bench points compared to 10 by Park.Â
Spillman led Park with 12 points on the night and was a rebound shy of a double-double.Â
Davis was in double-figures as well with 10 points and a solid six rebounds. Cooper was nex up in points with eight for the game and three Pirates racked up two steals, including Hill, Cooper, and Spillman.
Park will be on the road in Canton, Mo. on Saturday to face Culver-Stockton College at 2pm.
