The Park University Indoor Track & Field program was in Maryville, Mo. on Saturday for a season opening meet at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri State University.
Park is off to a strong start on the season, to put it lightly. The team across the board has over 20 personal records in their opening weekend. Not to mention an impressive five NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship Qualifying Marks and five school records.
Going down the line,
Mya Charles qualified in the 60m event and then took off for a personal record of 7.64 for 5th place and a qualifying time to nationals. She is an NAIA Outdoor All-American from last spring's women's 4x100m relay team, but will be making her first appearance at the NAIA Indoor National Championships.
On the women's side there were eight top five finishers on Saturday, including Charles,
Rosjai Curtis,
Hope Klamm, Lily Comarcho,
Anna Joyce,
Jonnicia Williams, and
Charlotte Timba.
For the guys, four finishers were within the top five, including two first place performances by
Ahmad Evans and
Palmer O'Connor. This matches the two first place finishes by the women's team, both captured by Curtis.
This trio just mentioned hit NAIA qualifying standards, like Charles, to make up the five qualifying marks. Curtis has qualified in back-to-back seasons in both women's triple jump and long jump and has also set new indoor records at Park in those events. She hit a 12.13m (39-09.75) in the triple jump and a 5.99m (19-08.00) long jump.
Another long jump record was broken on the men's side by Evans, who took 1st place with a 7.41m (24-03.75) leap. His teammate
Shemar Caines also joined Evans as an NAIA indoor qualifier with a 5th place finish with a mark of 7.15m. For the senior from the Bahamas, Evans, he has now qualified for his third straight indoor national championship and the junior from St. Kitts and Nevis, Shemar, will return to nationals after two consecutive trips prior to this.
Impressively,
Palmer O'Connor nearly matched is indoor 1,000m record that he set in his freshman season and was one-tenth away from tying that time with a 2:27.67. He took 1st place with that time and punched his ticket to indoor nationals for a second consecutive season.
In their opening meet with the Pirates,
Anna Joyce and
Cody Hammond also set new Park indoor records. Both of these distance specialists are coming off an NAIA Cross Country National Championship appearance from the fall and Joyce has followed that up with a 3:03.43 in the women's 1,000m for the new Park record. Hammond, likewise, in the mile impressed with a 5th place finish with Park's new record time of 4:21.52.
Park will be in Ames, Iowa on Friday for the ISU Holiday Classic coming up. See the rest of the team's results at the link or below:
