The Park University women's basketball program was in Hesston, Kan. on Saturday in a mid-season non-conference matchup with Hesston College. Park breezed through the Larks, 87-36.
The Pirates improve to 7-5 on the year and hold at 2-4 in the Heart. The Larks are only 4-14 on the year now. The Pirates are riding a three-game win-streak.Â
Park held Hesston to exactly nine points a quarter, while exploding offensively with two quarters over 25 points.
In Park's last two wins, they have held opponents to under 60 points and have been scored over 85 points in each of those wins.
In the early going, the Pirates jumped out to a 10-3 lead after four Pirates contributed scores, including four points from
Charleece Davis. Then
Nevaeh Spillman went on a scoring run of her own with eight unanswered points to put Park up 18-5. Under 6:30 in the first quarter though, the Larks were only one-of-eight from the field to close out the quarter. Park; however, had no problem scoring as
Elizabeth Boehm nailed a three-pointer to give Park a 21-7 lead with 2:07 to play. Davis continued the run with four points to close the quarter, 25-9.
Over the first four minutes of the second quarter, Park went out to a 9-4 run, including a three-pointer by Boehm. Both teams were consistent in their turnovers each quarter, as Park had three turnovers in each of the first two quarters, while the Larks were at six per quarter, which led to a wider and wider deficit for Hesston to make up. Under five minutes, the Pirates maintained a healthy lead, shooting 50-percent from the field, including buckets from Spillman, Davis, and
Alexus Woodard to close out the half, 44-18.
A 7-2 run to start the third quarter, including a made three from
Jordan Bianco pushed Park's lead to 31, 51-20. Woodard got her name in the mix quite a bit in the third quarter with six points to help spur on another offensive explosion of 26 points for the quarter to put the game far beyond reach for the Larks, 70-27. This was the second consecutive game where Park had all 13 players on the roster get in the game, as Park sailed to a 87-36 win.
Park shot 44.4-percent from the field with a five-of-20 day from beyond the arc, while Hesston sat at 24-percent and two-of-11 from deep.
Both teams were 10-of-12 from the free-throw line, making good use of those opportunities.
Hesston had three times the turnovers as the Pirates with 27 for the game, amounting to 24 points for Park the other direction. Second chance points were also leaning Park's way at 19 compared to just five for Hesston.
Park led from start to finish and got to their largest lead of 53 by the 1:34 mark in the fourth quarter.
Davis led Park with 20 points, which set a new game-high for her at Park. She nearly reached a double-double with seven boards. She was also one of four Pirates with multiple steals, leading Park with three.Â
Spillman impressed again with a 14-point game on nine rebounds and led Park with five assists.Â
Boehm was one of two Pirates with multiple three-point makes and scored 16 points.
Sheridan Curley hit some late threes as well for six points in the contest.
Defensively,
Marina Perdiguero had an excellent effort with three blocks.
Park will be on the road for a New Year's Eve game at 1pm in North Newton, Kan. against Bethel College.
