The Park University women's basketball program was in Crete, Neb. on Saturday in a afternoon contest with Doane University of the Great Plains Athletic Conference in Crete, Neb. The Pirates remained unbeaten with a 70-65 win.
Park moved to 4-0 on the year and gave the Tigers their first loss at 2-1.
The Pirates held Doane to under 10 points in the opening quarter and as this game went along, both teams found their stride. At the 5:46 mark in the first quarter, Park's defense turned it on with back-to-back steals from
Elizabeth Boehm and
Charleece Davis.
Nadiyah Cooper on the other end, jump started the offense with a trey to capture the lead, 12-10. Lockdown defense kept the Tigers off the board and
Marina Perdiguero and Boehm tacked on buckets to close the quarter at 16-10.
It was a back-and-forth second quarter with the Pirates keeping the Tiger runs at bay and never relinquished the lead with a four-point halftime lead, 31-27. 11 points for Boehm led Park in the first half, while the team secured seven steals.
Back-to-back three balls in the third quarter helped the Tigers tie the game at 33 even. Park came roaring back, scoring 11 unanswered points for a 46-35 lead, which was highlighted by a
Madison Hill triple. The Tigers would chip away, but Park would retain a 50-44 lead.
Davis,
Erica Farmer, and
Alexus Woodard combined for a 8-1 run to begin the first three and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, 58-45. This final burst by Park was enough to exit Crete with the win after defense and free-throws closed out the game for the Pirates, 70-65.
Davis and Boehm were leading Park with 17 and 16-point days. Six assists were delivered by Davis, while Boehm led Park with five steals.
It was a double-double for Perdiguero with 12 points on four-of-seven shooting and 11 rebounds.
As a whole Park shot 40-percent from the field to Doane's 35-percent.
Both sides had their fair share of turnovers, 22 for Doane and 18 for the Pirates. Three-point percentages made up an insignificant difference, but Doane got to the line 37 times making 23 free-throws compared to Park's 12-of-18 day.
