The Park University women's volleyball program won their second match in a row on Friday against William Woods University in Fulton, Mo., 25-23, 26-28, 25-20, 25-20.
Park improved to 17-7 and 13-4 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while the Owls go down to 18-11 and 9-8 of the same.Â
With it tied in set one at 8-8, both teams alternated points until the Pirates got a little separation with a three point lead, 14-11. Park held onto the lead until the Owls overtook Park with a 3-1 run to make it 21-20. Kills by
Silvia Albani and
Indi Zetic, along with a double-block by
Angelina Rodriguez and
Isadora Dias restored a 24-21 lead for the Pirates. Despite William Woods making it 24-23, Dias came through with a solo block to shutdown set one, 25-23.
The second set was another close race at the end with five ties from the 22nd point on. William Woods took the last two points, including a block to end set two, 28-26. Both the Pirates and Owls matched one another with 16 kills in set two with only one error separating the two sides with a .160 hitting percentage for Park and a .176 for the Owls.
A 4-0 run set the tone for the Pirates in set three, including a service ace by Rodriguez and two kills by
Daniela Gomez. Park stayed on the offensive with a 9-3 lead, but a 4-0 run by William Woods got them back within reach at 9-7. After staying close like this, a 5-2 run by the Pirates forced a William Woods timeout at 18-13. The Owls brought it within three points again but Rodriguez' kill and back-to-back service winners by Albani gave Park a 2-1 lead, 25-20.
The fourth set was similar to the beginnings of the third and Park was out to a 7-2 start. A 5-2 run, including kills by Zetic and Rodriguez, helped Park to a 13-9 lead, as William Woods stayed close with the Pirates each set of the match. It wasn't until the end that the Pirates finished off the set with a nice 5-0 run to get to a six point lead, 22-16. Rodriguez did a little bit of everything with a double-double on 12 kills, 15 digs, and two service aces; and she closed out the match with a service ace for the 25-20 win.Â
Zetic had another note worthy performance with a double-double as well on 19 kills and 10 digs.Â
None had a better dig performance than
Jullia Alvarez with 27 digs in teh match and five assists.Â
Albani was the third Pirate to reach a double-double with a respectable 44 assists and 12 digs.Â
Gomez put forth a strong performance as well with 14 kills and hit .263.Â
The defensive effort at the net by Dias was unreal with nine blocks in the match, including three solo blocks.
