The Park University women's volleyball program hosted the Vikings of Missouri Valley College on Friday, earning the three set sweep 30-28, 25-16, 25-15.
The Pirates climb to 15-6 overall and 11-3 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while Missouri Valley drops to 13-14 on the year with a 6-10 Heart record.Â
Park and the Vikings set this match up for some excitement with an entertaining first set with both teams showing out with 18 kills. Neither side had much separation, especially late in the set with 13 ties from 14-14 on. The Pirates'
Indi Zetic had a kill to tie it at 22-22 and another Missouri Valley attack error gave Park the 23-22 lead. After a timeout by the Vikings they went for a two-point swing for the 24-23 lead. Park faced set point by the Vikings three times before kills by
Isadora Dias and
Angelina Rodriguez gave them the advantage, 27-26. Two block assists by
Florencia Churin, along with
Silvia Albani and Zetic were big plays that turned the momentum Park's way. Finally, an attack error by the Vikings ended the set, 30-28.
Park went on a 6-1 run to begin set two and kept on the accelerator with a 25-16 set two win. The Vikings had some fight in the third set against Park, but four Zetic kills, two attack errors, and another block by Churin and Albani gave Park a 6-0 run to put them in a favorable position, 15-7. There was no looking back for Park, who ended the match with a sweep 25-15.
The Pirates held Missouri Valley to a .020 hitting percentage, while hitting .221 offensively. Churin and Albani were a big part of the wall up front with six block assists each.
Zetic and Albani had double-doubles in the game. Zetic led Park with 17 kills and 16 digs, while Albani contributed 37 assists and 11 digs.
Jullia Alvarez led the way for Park with 18 digs for the match and
Angelina Rodriguez played her role well with 15 digs and three block assists.
Daniela Gomez was the only other Pirate in double-figure offensive numbers with 12 kills and hit .500 on 22 attempts and only one error.
