The Park University Athletic Department teamed up with Children's Mercy Hospital during Breast Cancer Awareness Month and raised $2,300 for continued cancer research.
The Pirates hosted cancer awareness games on October 11th for our soccer doubleheader against Baker and on October 14th's women's volleyball match against Benedictine. All proceeds from these events and additional funds from donations went towards the total raised. This amount also includes $820 from 2024-25.
At halftime of the men's soccer game, Park's Athletics Director presented a check to Megan Boos of Children's Mercy. "We've been hosting Cancer Awareness games for many years and have proudly supported many national initiatives" said Gillette. "Our fans and visitors are always incredibly generous on the nights when we donate our gate proceeds to cancer research. Many of our Park staff have personal connections to Children's Mercy, so this year we chose to direct our support toward cancer research happening right here in our community. We are thrilled to partner with the Children's Mercy Cancer Center — contributing to the care of children and the search for a cure is truly special to Park University Athletics."
The Children's Mercy Cancer Center provides comprehensive care for nearly 2,000 children and families each year and focuses on research that produces real results—like survival rates that beat the national average—for children with cancer, sickle cell disease, hemophilia and other blood disorders. As the region's non-profit pediatric hospital, Children's Mercy relies on our community champions to join us in providing the best care possible for every child facing a cancer diagnosis.
"We are so grateful to Park University for rallying their community around children and families facing cancer," says Jenea Oliver, PhD, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer at Children's Mercy. "Their generosity helps Children's Mercy provide hope, healing and the best possible care for the 2,000 children we treat with cancer each year. Thank you for being a champion for kids' health!"
Park is grateful for the generosity shown this month by all attendees at Julian Field and Breckon Sports Center, and we look forward to continue to support this worthy cause.
