The Pirates Unable to Breakthrough Against No. 22 Benedictine

Park University's softball program traveled to Atchison, Kan. on Sunday to face the No. 22 Ravens of Benedictine College. The Ravens were a tough team to crack and swept the Pirates, 12-1 in five innings and 7-1.

Drop below .500 on the season at 15-17 and are 10th in the Heart of America Athletic Conference standings with a 5-11 conference record. The Ravens have been sturdy this season at 34-7 and 14-3 in the Heart.

GAME 1 | L, 1-12 | Box Score

A seven run second inning was a rude awakening for the Pirates as four hits, including a three-run home run at the end of the inning, would give Benedictine the upper hand.

Caroline Riffer singled to begin the game and would come back with a walk in the top of the third inning. She has been lethal on the base paths and had two stolen bases in the game. In the third, her stolen base got her in scoring position for Shelby Sanders to knock her in on the base-hit. Riffer now has 30 stolen bases this season, which is tied for No. 1 in the Heart.

Still, Park would only have two hits in the game and another five runs came in to score between the third and fourth innings for the Ravens for the 12-1 win.

Dakota Rau and Abbie Farmer both threw two innings in the circle.

GAME 2 | L, 1-7 | Box Score

The Pirates were only two hits behind the Ravens in game two, six for Park and eight for Benedictine. Nine Pirate runners would be left stranded though compared to only one for the Ravens.

Two doubles by Sanders and Kal Day got the Pirates on the board in the third inning and put the Ravens down 1-0.

Lauren Fiene threw three scoreless innings to begin the game, but the bottom of the fourth snowballed on Park as four hits and an error brought in five runs.

The Ravens added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 7-1 win.

The Pirates will have senior day on Saturday, April 20 against Clarke University at the Park Softball Complex. The senior ceremony will begin prior to first pitch of the 1pm game one. WATCH
