Park University's baseball program hosted Missouri Valley College on Friday and Saturday, taking the first three games at Comfort Field and then the Vikings came back to salvage a win in game four.
GAME 1 | W, 4-2 | Box Score
Park allowed a run in the first inning to the Vikings, which held until the third inning. Park overtook the Vikings with three runs on four hits and one error for the 3-1 lead.
Gilberto Torres and
Victor Sanchez-Ramos earned RBI singles.
Torres came back with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning for the 4-1 lead, which was held nicely by
Raul Garcia and company. Garcia moves to 5-1 on the season and struck out five.
Alex Lozada threw up a scoreless sixth inning to setup
Bryce Perdieu for his third save of the season.
Alex Rodriguez did an outstanding job from the leadoff spot with a three-for-four game.
GAME 2 | W, 8-2 | Box Score
Guillermo Gelpi followed up Garcia nicely with a six-inning, three-hit performance on the mound for his fourth win of the year. Despite walking four batters, he also struck out six to make up for it.
The Vikings scored for the second straight game in the first inning. After tacking on another run in the top of the third, the Pirates rallied with another three-spot in the third inning. Rodriguez hit in
Corey Bradford with a single to left field, but the second error of the inning cost Missouri Valley as two runs came in on fielder's choices, which also involved a throwing error by the second baseman to give Park a 3-2 lead.
It was a steady stream of runs the next two innings, as Bradford homered to take a 5-2 Park lead. In the bottom of the fifth
Houston Penrod cleared the bases with a triple to reach the 8-2 total.
GAME 3 | W, 7-0 | Box Score
It was good offense by Park in game three, but an even better performance on the hill by
Adam Stilts who threw a one-hit complete game to reach his fifth win on the season. He only walked two and struck out seven. Possibly most impressive was that he had a perfect game going through the sixth inning and Missouri Valley got their first base runners in the top of the seventh.
Nine different batters got hits for Park and they reached 10 as a team.
Zayne Morrow began the scoring in the bottom of the second with a solo home run. The next half inning,
Ricardo Hernandez and Penrod both singled to bring in three more runs, Penrod with two RBI's on his swing.
An RBI-single by
Billy Rivera, a sacrifice fly by Torres, and throwing error by the Vikings put the game well out of reach, 7-0.
GAME 4 | L, 6-15 | Box Score
Nearly have a perfect game thrown against the Vikings did not phase them for the final game of the series, as they put up 15 runs on 16 hits with Park having three errors in the field.
For three of the four games, Missouri Valley got to a first inning lead. Even though Sanchez evened the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second with a two-run home run, the Vikings came back with a four-run third inning.
After three more runs rolling in for the Vikings in the fourth, Sanchez came through to homer once more in the fourth followed by a sacrifice fly by
Yadiel Santana to cut the deficit to four.
Before the game was out though, Missouri Valley added again in the seventh for a 15-6 win.
Bradford had a double in the game and was the only other hitter besides Sanchez with a multi-hit game.
