Pirates Show What They are Capable of in Split with No. 19 Oklahoma Wesleyan

Park University's baseball program had an excellent game one against No. 19 Oklahoma Wesleyan University in an 11-4 win, while falling in game two 8-2 on Friday and Saturday. Game one was played at Comfort Field, while the second day was played in Bartlesville, Okla.

Park is now 19-9 on the season and have their second win against an NAIA Top 25 opponent in 2024. The Eagles are now 23-11 on the year.

GAME 1 | W, 11-4 | Box Score

The Pirates were down 1-0 after a run by the Eagles in the top of the first, but Park was able to immediately answer with four runs. Three straight singles came in by Gilberto Torres, Ricardo Hernandez, and Victor Sanchez-Ramos for 2-1 lead. Houston Penrod had the top afternoon of any hitter though and with two outs he started off his day with a two-RBI base hit for the 4-1 lead.

Guillermo Gelpi fought back in the second inning and pitched a scoreless inning. A two-run home run in the top of the third inning made it 4-3, but once again the Pirates responded. This time Park had their biggest inning of the day with a five-run bottom of the third. The Pirates had five hits but also benefited from two errors by the Eagles.

Penrod came back up in the bottom of the fourth for a two-run home run to put him at five RBI's for the day.

Gelpi settled in behind his offense and went five innings with four earned runs, four strikeouts, and moves to 6-1 on the year.

Raul Garcia earned a save for throwing four innings to close out the game with no runs allowed on only two hits and struck out seven.

GAME 2 | L, 2-8 | Box Score

Oklahoma Wesleyan got to the lead with one run in the first inning, like the day prior.

Adam Stilts threw two shutout innings after this, but Oklahoma Wesleyan took advantage in the fourth inning with four runs. Bryan Aguirre took it the rest of the way, pitching three innings on only three hits and allowed one earned run.

The Pirates were silent at the plate and down seven runs in the top of the seventh, Torres got things started with a triple to set up Hernandez for an RBI single.

One more run for each team came in in the next two innings to reach a 8-2 final. Again Torres jump started the inning with a one-out single. Hernandez followed suite to this time bring Sanchez up for the RBI single.

The Pirates will be on the road on Tuesday, April 2 for a single game against No. 12 Missouri Baptist University at 2pm in St. Louis, Mo. WATCH
