The No. 3 nationally ranked Park University men's volleyball program traveled to Canton, Mo. on Friday evening to take on the Wildcats of Culver-Stockton College, earning the 3-1 win, 25-11, 25-17, 16-25, 25-10.
The Pirates climb to 14-2 and 6-1 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while the Wildcats are 2-15 and still hunting for a win in the Heart.
The Pirates had 13 kills in three of the four sets in the win and hit for a whopping .404. Defensively, the Pirates tied their season-high with 11 total blocks, the fourth match with over 10 total blocks as a team.
Jovan Nikolic was called upon to serve during a 6-0 run to establish Park at 10-3 in set one.
Alessandro Tolin had three block assists, combined with
Nicolas Tenius and
Joao Infante in that stretch. There was little resistance for Park moving through set one and Tenius capped off the set with a kill for the 25-11 win.
The Wildcats were in much better shape come set two and were only down two points at 10-8. A 4-0 run for the Pirates turned the momentum back to the Pirates, which included a kill by
Veljko Stojic and double-block from
Haris Delic and Stojic. Park led by as much as nine points before the set finished out on a Delic kill, 25-17.
Culver-Stockton took back a set in the third frame, beginning with a 11-6 lead. This time the Wildcats stoll the show and led by as much as 12 points before the 25-16 finish.
It was a 9-2 start for Park in set four as a 3-0 and 4-0 run helped get to the early lead. It was the best win of the evening for the Pirates as Park came away with a 15-point victory for the match, 25-10.
Tolin had a team leading six block assists, while firing four kills.
Gabriel Soares was the only Pirate to secure 10 kills, while Tenius, Infante, and Stojic all had six kills.
Nikolic led Park with 32 assists, while
Marcus Lucchesi was next up with nine assists.
Joao Bonanoni led Park with seven digs, and right behind him were Nikolic and Tenius with five digs.
Park stays on the road to challenge No. 12 Missouri Valley College on their home court in Marshall, Mo. at 2pm Saturday.
