No. 4 Park Wins Three of Four at Southwest Baptist Tournament

3/26/2024 3:08:00 PM

The Park University No. 4 nationally ranked women's beach volleyball program was in action against NCAA Division II opponents in the Southwest Baptist University Tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 22-23 in Ozark, Mo.

The Pirates lost their first match, but persevered amidst adversity for a 3-1 weekend overall. Park's eight match win streak was ended, but Park is still hot an 11-1 record in their last 12 matches. On the year, the Pirates are 12-5 and have only lost to NCAA Division I or II talent.

Park's 8-0 win streak began on March 2 against Southwest Baptist and this time the Bearcats were able to take a match from Park, 3-2. The No. 3 and No. 4 pairs for Park took care of business all weekend, as Carla Pons Sales/Izabella Ceratti and Luna Martins/Mafalda Bras were undefeated in their four matches. This could have just as easily been a 3-2 win for Park, as Grecia Ung/Arianna Marino in the No. 2 spot went to three sets like Pons/Ceratti, but only lost their two sets by a combined five points.

Park picked up where they left off on day two with McKendee and the identical pairs won in a 4-1 win. Patricia Carrio Ubeda/Serena Arruda were in their first appearances in the No. 1 spot this weekend, but were unable to break through with a 0-3 record as a pair this time around in the top flight. Unlike the day prior though, the Pirates had four sweeps in the remaining pairs.

It came down to the wire again between Park and Southwest Baptist in the final match of the weekend. This time the Pirates prevailed 3-2. There were two pairs that went to three sets and that pattern stayed consistent as each team was 2-2 in the three set matches over the weekend against one another. Jullia Alvarez/Irene Verdino have only had three matches together as a pair in the No. five slot, but came out strong in the first set with the biggest set one of the match at 21-8. Unfortunately, the Bearcats rallied for the 2-1 win in the remaining sets. Pons/Ceratti had a close first set, 21-18, but turned it on to close out the day with a 21-11 win for the sweep.
