The (RV) Park University women's volleyball program made away with the clean sweep over Baker University on Tuesday evening in Baldwin City, Kan., winning in straight sets 25-23, 25-16, 25-8.
The Pirates are now 16-9 on the season with a 6-5 Heart of America Athletic Conference record. The Pirates are currently in 6
th in the conference at the moment, while the Wildcats are 3
rd to last in the Heart at 3-10 in conference and 10-12 on the year.
The Pirates maintained a hitting percentage of over .300 the whole evening and started off with a .385 in set one. The Pirates had 18 kills in set one, which turned out to be the most contested set of the evening. Baker had a 3-0 lead to establish themselves at 7-4. Their lead would continue to grow, as they led by six at 13-7. At this point the Pirates kicked it into gear with a 5-1 run to come within two points at 14-12. Kills by
Avery Caskey and
Daniela Gomez tied the match at 16-all. The set was tied three more times, before Park took the 21-19 lead on a 3-0 run. Plenty of Pirates got in the mix with kills by
Izabella Ceratti and
Trinity Iverson, and a service ace by
Irene Verdino. Both sides would go back and forth, and the Wildcats would even tie at 23-23, but another Iverson kill and Gomez ace wrapped things up at 25-23.
It was tied four times before either side could get above five points in set two, but a 4-0 run made it 8-5 Park. Service aces kept on being an advantage for Park as 12 service aces landed in the match for the Pirates. Park looked to gain more and more control as things progressed, holding a 16-9 lead. There was not much stopping the ship at this point, as Park sailed to a 25-16 win after three unanswered points to take things to set three.
It was 3-0 run to begin set three for Park. Baker held tough at 4-3, but that would not stand for long as a 5-0 run would make it 12-6 Park. That was not the last big run though, as the senior
Aly Anderson held serve for a 12-0 run taking Park from 12-7 to match point. Three aces were delivered by Anderson during this span alone. Park would take the sweep after a 25-8 win.
Ceratti led with 13 kills, while Gomez reached a double-double at 10 kills and digs apiece.
Verdino led with 13 digs, while Anderson also cracked double-digit digs with 11.
Four Pirates had three assists, including Gomez, Verdino, Anderson, and Patricia Carrio Ubeda.
It was a balanced production of assists from
Jullia Alvarez and
Angelina Rodriguez.
Serena Arruda also caught her first Heart action of the year and came in for two digs and two assists.
The Pirates will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Friday, October 25 to face Mount Mercy University.
