The (RV) Park University women's volleyball program was swept on Friday evening in Olathe, Kan. against the Pioneers of MidAmerica Nazarene University, 21-25, 23-25, 18-25.
The Pirates move to 14-9 and 4-5 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while MidAmerica Nazarene University make the jump to 13-11 and 7-5 in conference play.
With the win, the Pioneers have now defeated Park both times in regular season play, the only Heart school to accomplish this feat against Park in the last five seasons.
The Pioneers had an advantage in hitting percentage with a .260, while Park hit .157.
MidAmerica Nazarene began the match with a 8-2 lead, to which Park responded with a 6-1 run to make it 9-8. One kill each from
Avery Caskey,
Maria Pim, and
Mafalda Bras got the wheels turning for Park. A 9-3 run was more than enough for the home team to eventually land at a 25-21 first set win.
Both teams' hitting percentage improved in set two, Park's by eight points to a .184 and MidAmerica Nazarene by 19 points to a .224. Both sides also had their most kills of the night with 18 kills for MidAmerica Nazarene and 15 kills for Park. Park got off to a 4-1 lead, but the Pioneers came back to tie 4-4. Park's largest separation from MidAmerica Nazarene was three points, which they were able to maintain for most of the set, but at 16-13, the Pioneers began to make headway. After bringing the deficit down to just two points, 19-17, a 3-0 run gave the Pioneers their first lead of the set. Park used its second timeout at this point and tied the very next series, but another 3-0 run for MidAmerica Nazarene was the final straw, as they held on by two points 25-23.
MidAmerica Nazarene held all the momentum and a 7-2 lead to start set three did not help the Pirates' cause. Park fought to make it 8-6, but a 5-0 scoring spree created separation that would last the rest of the set, leading to the largest win of the evening 25-18.
Izabella Ceratti led Park with nine kills and
Daniela Gomez was a close second with seven kills. It was evenly spread out between Caskey, Bras, and Pim with five kills each.
Irene Verdino led with 16 digs in the match, while Gomez and
Aly Anderson were in double-figure digs as well with 13 and 10, respectively.
Jullia Alvarez and
Angelina Rodriguez split time at setter, Rodriguez put up 18 assists and Alvarez dished out 14.
Park had three total blocks for the match, while the Pioneers denied seven blocks at the net.
