Park University's women's basketball program were in Canton, Mo. on Monday evening to makeup a previously postponed contest with Culver-Stockton College. The Wildcats could do no wrong in their own house and defeated the Pirates, 78-50.
Park's loss breaks a three-game win streak and go to No. 8 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference directly behind the 7-9 Wildcats, while the Pirates are 7-10 in conference play. Park has the greater season record than the Wildcats though at 10-11 compared to 8-12.
The game started with a 6-0 run for Culver-Stockton. The Pirates were able to get on the board with
Taylor Shelby and
Nevaeh Spillman's jumpshots, but still were down 10-4 at the 6:08 mark. The lead continued to build for the Wildcats with a 6-2 run, reaching the 3:20 mark with a score of 16-6. That's were the deficit stayed as
Kate Sokolova kept it within 10 to end the quarter, 21-11.
The second quarter started off with a
Marina Perdiguero layup off of
Angel Wiggins' steal, but a three-pointer sounded off for Culver-Stockton immediately following. Neither team scored again for 1:43, but an and-one by Culver-Stockton gave them a boost. Only seven points were registered by the Pirates in the second quarter, as Culver-Stockton extended their lead to 20 by the end of the half, 38-18.
Avery Oetting made back-to-back three-pointers to begin the third quarter to erase the progress made on Shelby's jumper in between the Wildcat threes. Another five unanswered points came in by Culver-Stockton, including another three to lead by 29 at the 7:27 mark in the third quarter. With 3:18 to go in the third quarter, the Wildcats led by as much as 32.
There was little the Pirates could do from this point, as Culver-Stockton had a constant hold on the flow of the game for a 78-50 win.
The Wildcats shot over 50-percent in this game at 51.9-percent, no easy feat. Park settled for a 28.8-percent field-goal percentage.
It was a two-of-13 night from deep for the Pirates, while the Wildcats were an unbelievable seven-of-11 from three.
Both teams shot a good percentage from the line, 14-of-17 for Park and 15-of-19 for Culver-Stockton.
Park had four more turnovers than the Wildcats, but 14 more points came off those turnovers for Culver-Stockton as well.
Perry had 13 points to help her team's cause, while Mikayla Artis had a solid performance with a near double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
Wiggins and Sokolova supported their team with eight and six points, respectively. Â Â
Park will hold off on their typical midweek game on Wednesday and instead their next game will be Saturday, February 3 at 12pm in Breckon Sports Center.
