Mustangs Hang in for Walk-Off Wins Against Park in Cedar Rapids

Park University's softball program ended their Heart of America Athletic Conference North trip in Cedar Rapids, Iowa against Mount Mercy University on Saturday. The Mustangs and Pirates played close games, but Mount Mercy picked up a pair of wins via walk-offs, 3-2 and 2-1.

The Pirates came off a sweep of Clarke on Friday, but now go back under .500 at 17-18 with a 6-12 Heart record. The Mustangs improve to 23-12 and 12-4 in conference play.

Both teams had 13 innings with the score tied and game one went to nine innings.

GAME 1 BOX SCORE | 3-2, 9 Innings

It was an outstanding effort from Adrianna Solary in game one who hurled a complete game in 8.1 innings pitched. She allowed seven hits, walked three, and struck out three. All three runs scored by the Mustangs were unearned.

Park scored two runs in the top of the third. Nia Muniz hit a double to left center to bring Paige McPheeters around to score. Shelby Sanders then drove in Macee Austin for Park's last runs of the afternoon.

It was an immediate response by the Mustangs with two runs on two hits and one error in the next half inning.

This game went over the normal seven innings and in the bottom of the ninth, Mount Mercy reached on an error to lead off the inning, which then turned into a run two-batters later on a double to win the game 3-2.

Kali Day had the only other double for Park besides Muniz. The Pirates also out hit the Mustangs with eight hits to the home team's seven hits. Park had two errors in the game though that ended up leading to runs, while Mount Mercy was clean defensively in the field.

GAME 2 BOX SCORE | 2-1

Runs were of a premium in game two, as only four hits were mustered by either team. Mount Mercy had the two errors in game two, while the Pirates had the clean sheet in the field.

Lauren Fiene threw a complete game with six scoreless innings on the board.

Park got their lone run across to score in the top of the sixth. First Austin led off the inning with a single to give Park some life. She then advanced to third on two wild pitches, setting up an error on the shortstop to allow the run to score.

Down to their last three outs, the Mustangs pulled off the walk-off again on three hits to score the winning two runs, 2-1.

Park has a break from midweek action and will pick up on April 22 for a Senior Day doubleheader against Benedictine College at 1pm at the Park Softball Complex. Watch the live-action here.
